Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The LBS by my house had a customer order a complete group for a custom build. Some idiot behind the counter ordered 2 groups, accidentally. This shop specializes in MTB's and the random neighborhood tune-up.

Every time I'd go in there to shoot the ****, I'd see this brand new Red group in the glass counter, just sitting there. time kept going by so finally I said to the owner, "How much off retail would I have to pay to take some of those components off your hands?"

He made me an offer I couldn't refuse, so I snatched up the cassette and FD.

That's sad. (This coming from a Campy guy!)

Anyhow, no one was claiming that a Red cassette will fail if you ride it in the rain... Only a moron would think that. Simply stating facts about limitations and pitfalls of the cassette's design so people can make more informed decisions about what product to try.

It's a fact that Red cassettes are harder to clean and are worse about picking up road crud, leaves, mud, etc. They are also noisy (11-26 and 11-28). They are however a decent choice for a light and durable road racing cassette, if the races are going to be on good surfaces. Throw in some gravel, dirt, pave and a little moisture..... I'd go for a Shimano or lower speced SRAM cassette.

They also have Ultegra for stupid cheap.
Not in stock they don't.

I bought a red cassette back in January. It was noisy until I replaced the SRAM PC-1090R chain with a KMC. It's been nice and quiet ever since.

The shifts are nice and precise (I'm using sram shifters and derailleurs, too) and it seems like the solid steel cassette should last a lot longer than any other material, without any weight penalty.

As for the weight, does it really matter? Are any of us on the short list to be picked up by QuickStep?

So, are the titanium plated cogs LESS durable?

It probably isn't to the people behind you. You just don't notice. I don't pay attention to drivetrain noise either.

I am familiar with how the shifting performs on the 105 cassette with an Ultegra chain. It is usually smooth and fast, but it gets sticky and sometimes misses shifts. And it is certainly not smooth under relatively heavy loads.

Would I see any performance difference with the Ultegra or DA? Does the Sram Red outperform DA on smoothness, even when under heavy stress?

If your deraileurs are adjusted correctly and your cassette and chain are well maintained and not worn you should be able to shift just fine under load. I never noticed a difference between 105, ultegra or DA cassettes or chains and yes, I have mixed and matched every possible combination.
