Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Maybe - depending on your definition of big.

Don't worry - gives you an excuse to get a new one

I'm sure it would be amazing to ride the Tarmac RED, especially considering I spend most of my time on Columbus steel. However, not only do I plan to buy a new bike, I plan to buy a new wheelset (w/ powertap). It just seems a bit much for me at this time. I technically could sell the mavics that come on the Tarmac Red, but I don't want to go through ebay. I really think my best bet is the Tarmac with 105, but unfortunately its currently not offered for me. Right now its either higher end than I want, or lower end than I want. Haha.

I still think the pre-2008 models were far better looking. That said, fantastic bike.

I like the look of the older Tarmacs as well... but what you can't see in that picture is that the seat tupe starts circular and then tapers into a square shape... then molds into the BB area. It looks pretty sweet in person, hard to capture on a camera.

+1 I've seen more metal bikes destroyed in crashes than carbon, racing or otherwise.

QUOTE=mcoomer;7758966]I had an '06 Tarmac Pro and know what you mean. The rectangular top tube, the brake cable that disappeared into the tube, the blue tint clearcoat over the carbon weave...it was a good looking bike and it rode very nicely. I sold that bike and now I have an '09 S-Works Tarmac SL2. I wouldn't go back if you paid me...

well alright, maybe if you paid me

Mike[/QUOTE]

I agree.... I bought a 2008 Tarmac Pro this July and by Aug sold it for a 2009 SL2 and have not looked back since.

That sounds unusually low, especially considering that you said you built it with Dura Ace. Tapeworm reported earlier that his '09 Tarmac Pro SL Sram weighed 16 lbs on the nose with Keo sprint pedals and the stock Ksyrium wheels. Not sure he had cages on it either. Do you have a lot of custom parts/wheels on it?

my 08 sl is 14lbs with tubular race wheels. Add almost a pound for ksyriums.

Nothing really custom. Its all D/A, except the cranks, and I had a set of 50 mm carbon tubulars on it. Scales don't lie.

This bike is amazing. I finally got to test ride it and now I won't settle for an Allez. Just one thought for anyone in the loop... how much would you estimate this bike costs to produce? That includes frame, red group, s-works cranks, carbon bars, ksyrium wheels etc... The MSRP is $5,000 which may be nothing for pcad, but that's a lot for me.

If I recall correctly, yours is also mostly Sram Red and besides the tubulars, has some other custom parts as well. Of course I don't expect your weight includes pedals or cages either.

When the OP and others asked what a Tarmac Pro SL Sram weighs, I expect they are talking about this off the shelf Tarmac Pro SL Sram without pedals and cages: https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkM...=39243&eid=115 From everything I have been able to gather following the various Tarmac threads, it seems highly likely to me that this bike weighs around 15.4 lbs without pedals and cages in a medium size. In the next couple of days, I will weigh one in the stock configuration myself.

OP, did you weigh the one you test road on a high quality hanging scale at the bike shop?

Yes, SRAM Red, and my weight includes pedals and gages. My point was that 14.8 with tubular race wheels is realistic for that bike, the frame of which is lighter than mine. The bike in the link is very likely to weigh close to or less than 15 pounds stock + pedals and cages.

Edit: I forgot that the wheels that came stock with my 08 SL are about a quarter pound lighter than ksyriums, my brakes are 0G-Ti, and my pedals are Ti Speedplays. Mith my stock wheels the bike is about 14.6, so I would expect the 09 Pro SL in the same size (54) with the same pedals, cages, etc to come in a little over 15, maybe 15.2 to 15.5

My bike (as pictured on the last page) comes in at 15.4 lbs. That's with bottle cages, ultegra pedals, and powertap computer/hardware (but no powertap hub, since I have a set of race wheels on there).

People forget that compared to a set of carbon tubs, ksyriums are NOT light. I sold the ones that came on my bike as soon as I got them, they are just so useless to me. They're not training wheels, and they are *****ty racing wheels.

I have one of the 09 Tarmac Pro SL's coming in a 56. It should be here sometime in the next few weeks. I ordered it about 5 weeks ago and i am really losing me cool waiting for it to show up.

As soon as it comes in i will weigh it with cages and Ultregra SPD-SL pedals on the scale at the shop.

No, I didn't get a chance to weigh it at the LBS. I highly doubt that I would notice a difference by riding the pro vs. the expert. I did, however, notice a huge leap up from the allez elite. I also plan to sell the wheels once I get them, as I will be getting a powertap wheelset built up (not sure what the specs are yet).

Don't let the "pro" fool you, this frame is a step up from last year's s-works "SL" model

Actually, he had nothing to do with it further than getting the bikes off the rack for me. I only have a choice of two bikes to race on... that being said, the allez felt like my steel bike compared to the tarmac. Its black and white between the two. The Allez simply looks like the tarmac with the bowed top tube, thats it.
