Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What on earth is going on here?

https://www.kodakgallery.com/Slidesho...e&conn_speed=1

Looks pretty bad. Can someone explain to me exactly what this is, how it forms and develops, etc..? Looks like it could happen to any of us.

Sorry about the link, looks like there is no absolute link to the picture. It's the 5th picture on the 5th row on the set of pictures on that site. It's a picture of a competitors legs, with what looks like damaged blood vessels.

It's not damaged blood vessel. It's called varicose veins, read up on it.

"Varicose veins are more common in women than in men, and are linked with heredity[6]. Other related factors are pregnancy, obesity, menopause, aging, prolonged standing, leg injury and abdominal straining"
In his case, it looks to me a result of genetics and other factors, I'd find it hard to believe varicose veins developing consistently on cyclists overexerting themselves.
