Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good Deal on a Tarmac SL2?

So I found a guy who would be willing to sell me a 2009 Tarmac SL2 Team Module with the options of the following build kits for the following prices:

SRAM Red Groupo with Mavic R-Sys Wheelset $3500
Campy Record Groupo with Roval Fusee SL wheelset $4000

The bike/goupsets/wheelsets are all brand new and never ridden.

I already know this is aa awesome deal, but I don't know which group set/wheelset I should go with.

Thanks everyone!!

I've pretty much universally heard bad things about the R-Sys.

I'd go Record because I'm a snob that way.

Wheels = scary stories. Go with Record. Just because, well, it's the best.

To be fair, I have both the Rovals and the R-SYS. I've had problems with both. The R-SYS is a nicer ride though.

Does everything check out? I saw that ad a while ago and now it's back up without pics.

It's a nice looking bike. I'd go with SRAM Red with the Roval wheelset.

^^+1 I have no experience with the wheels but I'd go SRAM Red and see if he'll swap the wheels to get the Rovals too. At least they won't catastrophically explode if one spoke goes bad, right?

haha... gotta love when equipment gets a bad rep...

Those prices are either below dealer cost, or extremely close to it.

I'd recommend extreme diligence in executing that transaction.

yeah...that's actually at what my Specialized dealer pays for them, those guys aren't making any money.

sick deal...do it soon before too many people blab about it and ruin the deal for your store.

btw...RED for the Win!!...dump the wheels off on ebay to some unknowing fred and get yourself something nicer.

Cool thanks for all the input guys!! The R-Sys wheelset is a brand new 2009 set. (I don't know if that makes them better). It looks like I am going to go red, even though I have been a campy follower up until now. I have actually seen the bike and the wheelset, I just need to move some funds around before I pull the trigger. The seller is a very nice guy (not through a shop), his story checks out.

The 2009 R-SYS wheelset looks nicer, it is a black rim (instead of silver) and black nipples (instead of "citron"), and it has the new hub design . It still has the same fundametal spoke design and associated drawbacks.

The Rovals on the other hand seem to have a design flaw in the rim. Mine and many people I know have had cracked spoke holes after only a few thousand miles.

I believe it is 09 Record yes. Like I said, my current setups and race wheelset is setup for campy, which is making me think I should stick with it. But red is just so cool!!!...

You could always just go with whatever group you want and sell the wheels. You already have some wheels. Neither of those wheelsets are that appealing to me.

Stick with Record. I'd probably pick Red, but if you're already a campy fan, why not get the sweet 09 group?

So true. And yes, it looks like either way I will probably stick with my rolf prima vigor wheelset which I love so much. Red is slightly lighter correct?

Update: I am locked and loaded and will be picking up the bike this friday, most likely going RED. This color scheme is truly stunning, I will post picture as soon as I manage to work my camera after I can get my hands to stop shaking from the sheer awesomeness of this bike.

Seems too pricey to me. You can get really good Scott, Felt, or Ridley, amongst others for this price. But I don't really like Specialized bikes. Too many people ride them and, it seems, I can always spot the "new guys" in the local group rides because they are riding a Tarmac.

I'm no Specialized fan in general, but the Tarmac is a kickass race bike.

I've been loving my 09' SL2 for months now; already have over 5,000 miles on her.

SRAM Red is great too; I've made the leap and not going back.

Maybe that's true in your area but not in mine. As an aside, I think it's pretty funny (and irrational) that people stop liking brands when they get too popular.

Note that the only good deal on a $4000 bike is when it's a used bike and you pick it up for $1200. It's impossible for a bicycle to be purchased for $4000 to be a good deal. It's a bicycle. Spending that much is fine, but it will NEVER be a good deal. Are you people crazy?

Say you buy it and ride it for a month. How much could you sell it for? Ok, how much could you actually sell it for?

Oh, man. The pics on the link in your sig make me miss Texas so much! I'll be visiting Dallas and Houston during Christmas. Not really good places or a good time to ride. But I miss Texas (especially the food!).

Do you participate in any group rides out there? I've heard that the cycling community in Texas is, well, not very big (except in college towns like Austin and Waco).
