Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best bike under 2000?

Hi,

I will be looking for a new bike in the future to race with. What, in your opinion, is the best bike for the money under $2000?

Daniel

Bikes: Specialized Allez Elite, BMC SLC01

Custom CAAD9. Sold my bike and am building one up with Red and some other goodies. With Open Pros, it'll cost just over 2K.

Bikes: Cervelo S5 SRAM Red -

probably a NEO from patrick.

Can't beat the the combo.

get the frame set, with SRAM Rival 2009, and whatever cheap bars wheels and stem he has, i am certain you won't find a much better deal.

CAAD 9 with an amazing wheelset. Or a specialized tarmac comp.

2nd the "used one" comment with the condition that you know what you're buying. If this is your first bike, I'd actually advise realizing that your bike can be only about 1/2 your budget. You'll get a lot more bang for your buck if you buy used off craigslist.

+1
This is the route I would recommend. When buying my most recent bike, I had a $1,500 budget. But after I factored in team clothing and race fees for this coming season, that budget went down to 1k. I ended up negotiating out a deal on craigslist for a Specialized Tarmac (ultegra shifters and rear, 105 front and brakes) with 150 miles. The owner never rode the bike because he hated dealing with traffic. I capitalized on the oppurtunity and got it for $850. It came with Look A5.1 pedals and a Butterfly Ti saddle. I sold the pedals and saddle for $150. So in theory I bought the bike for $700. Not a single scratch on it.
