Your Sunday Ride (Nov. 16th, 2008)

Woke up early this morning almost as pissed off as when I went to bed. Long story. Just not having the motivation or desire to get on the bike today. Looks like a nice day except for the 18-20 MPH winds. Sunny and clear skies with current temps in the 58-60 aiming for mid 60's by mid day. Enjoy your day people. You never know when your last one will be.

How was your sunday ride?

urbanknight 11-16-08 08:31 AM

Mine was cancelled because of the smokey air from the fires.

Hammertoe 11-16-08 08:33 AM

40 minute Tempo effort....

Yep, no outdoor riding for me either -- smoke and ash all over the place. Fortunately, there's no fire threatening us, so the inconvenience of not being able to ride is infinitesimal in the grand scheme of things.

You think it's still too smoky to ride? I haven't been outside yet so I have no clue. I was looking forward to riding this morning. I'm showing a nice 70F on my outdoor thermometer.

triplebutted 11-16-08 09:01 AM

I'm off to ride towards the fires cause its nice and hilly in that direction but will probably not come close. Smoke don't look to bad on this side of town. I'll head towards RSM and if the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Como_Street ride is going the other way, I'll turn around and see who's out.
Gotta love SoCal. Riding all year round.

I can smell it in the air, although it's not as bad as it was in Agoura yesterday (I drove through). However, they canceled the Pasadena marathon because of the smoke. I have asthma and allergies, and I'm trying to live as long as possible so I don't leave my wife alone for too long (women in her family usually live to be 100+) so I'd rather err on the safe side. Almost all of us who were planning on riding B2B today agreed to cancel. I'll be in the gym. It's only base miles anyway.

I'll go out and do a smell test. I would imagine breathing in all that stuff from the fires can't be good.

Was all set for a 55 mile ride with the team, put the bike in the car, drove to the meeting spot, unloaded, and didn't see my helmet.

crap.

Sooooo my sunday ride consisted of 3 hours on the rollers.

Basil Moss 11-16-08 09:34 AM

I don't think no helmet is a reason not to ride. I always ride without, except in racing where it is compulsory.

My ride was nice- drizzling rain for 4 hours, with a tea stop halfway, we flooded the tea room! They were very nice about it though. On my fixed I just finished- it's really nice to ride, I like it. Plus it has mudguards, so I didn't have to ride at the back with the naughty kids!

Team ride, team policy. We represent our sponsors and have a strong desire to encourage all the little kids who see us whizz by and say "WOW" to wear their helmets and ride safely.

cold and windy. no outside riding for me today. Gonna hop on the rollers for a few.

cyclewolf 11-16-08 11:24 AM

Rode about 33 miles, air temp 34 degrees, wind chill in the mid 20's I believe with 10 to 15mph winds. It was actually a really good ride as I think I have finally figured out my layering system to keep me warm in that weather - save for my feet which were *way* too cold.

cferrell 11-16-08 11:26 AM

Boy, am I glad I live in Texas. Weather is perfect today. High 50's to low 60's all day with minimal winds. There's no way I can stay in today. Metric century sounds good in the flats of south Houston. Hope everyone else gets out if the weather permits.

mollusk 11-16-08 11:52 AM

All my usual Sunday riding buds found excuses, so today was solo. First I replaced a rivnut on one of my bikes and then started with 39 F temps and a breeze. Rode easy for about two hours. By the time I got home it was about 50 F with wind gusts to 20 mph.

Pablo. 11-16-08 12:03 PM

It was windy. I was tired. That is all.

damn, that would suck

is riding to the ride an option? that way you'll never forget anything.

MDcatV 11-16-08 12:08 PM

very windy, 40 deg F. 3-ish hrs., plenty of quality echelon riding, too bad we couldnt use the whole road. good fun. although echelon-ing when wind is from the right seems to confuse people.

haimtoeg 11-16-08 12:09 PM

Too much smoke in the air here.

RideCO 11-16-08 12:10 PM

Easy breezy 25 mile recovery ride on the MUP, as Sunday is rest/recovery day. Hard climbing ride yesterday.

valygrl 11-16-08 12:23 PM

35 miles, the first half with slower friend, the second half solo. All of them were bonus miles, because the forecast was for howling wind and it didn't come true. Yay!!!

roadiejorge 11-16-08 12:34 PM

31 miles in chilly and windy conditions. When I looked out the window I saw some of the tree tops bending in the wind so I knew it was going to be a tougher ride than usual. The Weather Channel had the winds blowing out of the west at 20mph with gusts up to 30mph, which wasn't that discouraging since I ride mostly north to south so I just had to deal with the really strong crosswinds. I rode through seveal "leaf tornados" that made not getting hit by a car at the intersections interesting. Good ride otherwise, and my new Capoforma heavy duty winter tights passed with flying colors though the full verdict will be out after tomorrow morning's ride when the temperatures will be in the mid 30s.

sojourn 11-16-08 01:41 PM

36 + miles, 2000 ft. elevation gain, slow pace, Santa Ana conditions here......dry as a popcorn fart! No matter what direction I was riding there was a headwind.
I feel for our northern neighbors, we had devastating fires down in San Diego last year........over all a half million people evacuated, but not near the property losses.........couldn't ride for several days due to the smoke.......
