Stupid statements from non-cycling relatives...
Here are two I've heard recently...
Father-In-Law on last visit to Wisconsin after a not all that long ride:
FIL: Be careful, too much exercise will enlarge your heart.
JKS: Worked for the Grinch. Must have been all of the hiking up and down the mountain.
This Thanksgiving discussion with Step-Dad discussing my current weight (I'm 5'10 @ 170 lbs right now. Looking for 160ish eventually and I track my calorie intake and expenditures and am guessing about 15% body fat. Down from about 250 lbs at my max with infinate body fat ):
SD: You know...that's how people become anorexic...they control their diet...
JKS: You know...that's how some people become obese, by not contolling their diet...
It's interesting that when people you know are used to you being over weight / out of shape how there is a lack of understanding when you get in some semblence of shape and actually "train". Even my daughter (8 y.o.) misses my tummy that she used to use as a pillow, but that's cute . I guess they are just used to me being fat and out of shape.
So, you got any odd statements to share like this? I'd love to hear them. I actually get a kick out of hearing these things from my friends and relatives and I'm sure I'd get a kick out of stupid statements from yours as well .

What's wrong with having a large heart?
Not that it's even possible to enlarge via exercise.

How about when they mention, in front of your wife, the cyclist that got hit by a car the other day. That never causes issues, does it?

My father-In-Law after volunteering at a race, " Those were some of the most indecent people I have EVER seen! Walking around in those Tally-Wackers short.....disgusting." He was laughing when he said it.

My mother is absolutely convinced that my cycling means she'll never have grandkids.

That's a good one. I give people "the look" when they do that. My wife is afraid I'm going to get killed cycling. I can only get her out on MUPs & rail trails and the like

Not my relatives but my coworkers. I was feeling really fit and had just reached my target weight of 167 (I'm 5'10" so it's not like I was getting super skinny). My boss asked me if I'd been sick because I was looking so "withdrawn."

Yeah, I'm digging my cheek bones. Haven't seen them in years
Same with the six pack. Becoming more and more visable. But then I don't often show that to my coworkers

From my wife: "You guys don't wear underwear under those shorts? That should be illegal!"
From my middle school students: "Are you a racer or something?" (I was wearing a solid blue jersey, black arm warmers, solid yellow wind vest, and black shorts)
From coworkers: "You ride 20 miles to work? That's a long way!" and then I tell them how many miles I ride on Saturday.
From a coworker: "That seat doesn't look comfortable."
My favorite from a coworker: "How much does it weigh?" (picks it up, complete with headlight, tail light, filled seat bag, 2 full bottles, CO2 pump, hand pump, and helmet hanging from the bars) "Wow, that's pretty light!"

Add to that the fact that I played goalie for 13 years with numerous shots below the belt, she thought the family name was doomed when I showed her the "itty bitty wedgie seat" on my road bike a couple years ago.
One almost three-year-old and another on the way has enlightened her.

Yeah I got the starving comments from my Mom back when I was skinny.
I think a lot of these are simple insecurity. Especially from the chubby ones who used to be jocks.

A skinny person in my wife's family is 5'6" and 200lbs. With that being said, my mother in-law announced at thanksgiving that there was something wrong with how much I weigh now.
5'9" and 150lbs. When I was first married to her daughter I weighed 130lbs and smoked like a chimney with no muscle mass. I ballooned up to 210 lbs and then discovered cycling.
I laughed and ignored her.
