Help me choose cables

I've done a search and not much came up.

Can someone recommend cables? I will have SRAM Force on a ti bike.

DuPont's powercordz seem overly pricey and flimsy, while Nokon is maybe too bling for me. What about Jagwire?

Much appreciated!

Are you talking about cables or housing?

SushiJoe 01-03-09 03:29 PM

If you have SRAM, go Yokozuna. I've heard they really transform the DoubleTap shifting. Could be hype but they seem very well received.

They can also be had much cheaper elsewhere, but they give a decent, albeit somewhat overly-fawning description here:

"What ceramic bearings are to your drivetrain, Yokozuna is to cables..."

haha. thanks for the tip. i'm thinking i'm going with rival on my next bike.

jagwire is fine. I have nokon and the outer housing needs to be kept lubed which is mildly annoying

Val23708 01-03-09 03:50 PM

the mechanic for bissel prefers yokozuna. i was thinking of checking them out myself when i decide to change my cables (they arnt more than 8 months old right now...)

Jagwire sucks compared to Shimano Dura Ace. They will work ok but you will have to replace them twice as often.

johnny99 01-03-09 04:58 PM

I've been using Dura-Ace cable housing for years. It is cheap, easy to install, and seems to work fine. Is there really any advantage to the expensive housing, besides looking expensive?

better cable feedback

texascyclist 01-03-09 08:24 PM

jagwire teflon coated. They look good and perform excellent.

prendrefeu 01-03-09 10:40 PM

Avoid Nokons.

Use iLinks as casing/housing, Powercordz for the shifters, Jagwire for the brakes.

seanoc 01-03-09 10:41 PM

Gore Ride On cables are the best you can get. Not as pricey as Nokon, and they last for years. There is a huge difference in shifting feel and speed. They can be a pain to install, but you will only have to do it once.

jrobe 01-03-09 10:44 PM

I just had my LBS change my shifting cables and they charged me $8 (cables and labor). You are better off spending your money by just replacing them frequently than spending more on expensive cables.

Really? I can't tell a damn bit of difference between the Gore Ride On cables that came with my SRAM Reg gruppo and the cheap Jagwire cables I was using before... Cables are cables. Avoid crimping the ends when you cut the housing, keep them from rusting, and they're all about the same.

prendrefeu 01-03-09 11:03 PM

Avoid anything with an expiration date.

Hint: Gore Ride-On cables have an expiration date.

Incorrect.

dekindy 01-03-09 11:07 PM

My LBS recommends Quality brand cable. They have it on spools and it is sold by the foot. Exactly the same as Jagwire. The only difference is the label. $1.99 for brake and $2.99 per foot for shift versus $3.99 for Jagwire and $4.99 for Dura-Ace per foot is what I was quoted.

Never had that problem

Yes but he is also using Bontrager tires so that should tell you the level of intelligence of that person.

He could kick your ass. Point is it's a Bissel bike.

Surferbruce 01-04-09 02:23 AM

yokozuna.

^oZ 01-04-09 05:10 AM

Jagwire is crap.

I use cordz with nokons, but if that's too blingy I'd recommend Gore Ride-On cables

vmajor 01-04-09 05:19 AM

Jagwire makes a huge range and variety of cable housing at different price points. The also OEM for many other brands.

Thus, if you pay for a higher end Jagwire set, you will get higher end performance.

V.

Might be the conditions you ride in? I've never had to lube my Nokon housing and I've ridden it for over 4 years.
