Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Open Pro vs. DT Swiss 1.1

I've pretty much settled on either Open Pro's or DT 1.1's with Ultegra hubs. The only big complaint I've heard about either is the difficulty of getting tires on the 1.1's. Aside from that issue, is there anything in particular that would sway you to one rim or the other?

have both and can't say I have any issues mounting various tires on either of them. Personally, I would ignore those complaints I've used Michelin PR3, conti gp4000, gp4000s, 4 season, and schwalbe ultremo all with no problems putting them on.

The dt swiss are a little deeper and they have wear indicators on the braking surface. Both have excellent braking surfaces.

The dt swiss also weigh more in probably all but the 28H single eyelet version although I must say I've not weighed any of them and am just going by other peoples words.

Both are great rims, you really can't pick wrong, imo.

Between those two, I would just get whichever I can get cheaper or whichever is in stock.

If you're a lightweight person, have you considered the Speedcific Niobium 19 (IRD Cadence)?

I've ridden the 1.1s for 2 years or so now....the only tire i've ever had a problem getting on is the Continental Force and Attack. Otherwise everything is comparable to other rims. I've ridden Mavic Equipe's, DT 1.1.s and DT 1.2s

No issues with tires here with the 1.1's.. Considering I have been using the open pro's for over a decade +, I was surprised with the 1.1's.. There are a similar weight to the open pro's but they feel more stiff laterally..

open pros have some issues with parts coming loose and ratteling. they also are less aero.

i'd go for the 1.1s.

fwiw, according to the good folks at Excel Sports, the DT RR1.1 is "A full 25 grams lighter than the Mavic Open Pro"

you could use the first sentence although the majority of users of open pro rims never have an issue thus their excellent reputation. but aero comparison is pretty ridiculous considering the depth of the two rims.

Actual weights tend to disagree. My guess is they are using the 28H single eyelet version, or simply the manufactured quoted weight. Or, perhaps things have changed since 2007 when I was weighing them (28H single r 1.1, 32H double r 1.1, 28H op, 32H op)

I have experienced that with the Open 4 CD and the Reflex clincher, but have been told that the Open Pro doesn't suffer from that. I wouldn't know firsthand because I don't have any Open pros.

According to the more reliable Weight Weenies, the Open Pro is about 5-10 grams heavier than the RR1.1.

The r1.1 has changed since those weights were posted on ww, at least for the 32h (but not all 32h) because they went from single to double eyelets. They are more like 450 to 460 if I remember correctly.

they didn't change, DT started offering a double eyeleted version in addition to the single eyelet.

I think the 1.1s are decently-priced at Excel.

Ambrosio Excellight SSC Road Rim. Third choice and you'd be the cool kid because honestly....they are an awesome rim that nobody seems to use much in the states.

I have ridden Open Pros and 1.1's for many many miles each. Honestly I currently prefer the 1.1. They are both very evenly matched, but I just like the feel of my 1.1's over my OPs.

Again it's like asking which glass of well made beverage is better. Pick the one you can get at the best price available.

The last two OPs I have had cracked at the spoke eyelets and had a rattle from a loose piece in the rim joint.

The 1.1s I've got have not had any problems. Between the two I'd get 1.1s.

But I'd get Kinlin/IRD 27/30mm "aero" rims instead of either. They are about the same weight but the larger cross section makes for a laterally stiffer rim. So they have fewer problems with spokes coming loose.

I would recommend the double eyelet vs the single version if you decide to go the DT1.1's. I rode a single and had it replaced pretty quickly due to cracking. The double has been bullet proof for a couple years now. Ride and forget rim imho. Honestly I don't know if they make the single eyelet version, but just in case you're going the ebay route...

Thanks for all the responses. I was leaning toward the 1.1's, which seem to be the general consensus here. I'll look into the other rims folks mentioned.

In my experience both of these rims are extremely comparable. the only differences bring that the DT 1.1's are a tad lighter but I have found that the OP's are often easier to get "more true". Either wheel will be fine, thats just my 2 cents. Here are some links to some that I found pretty cheap:

Mavic Open Pro/Ultegra

https://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com...d&productId=37

DT Swiss RR1.1/Ultegra

https://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com...&productId=100

The DT 1.1's will save about 60 grams for the set BTW....

Having riden several Open Pros, I would try 1.1s before going back to the Mavics. They just weren't impressive in any way. Nothing really wrong with them, but they're not light, aero, or bombproof. They're just "rims."

My current favorites are Velocity and KinLin/Niobium.
