Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

East Coast Weenies: Ride While You Can

What could be the Blizzard of 09 is setting up for Wed. Massive western low that could combine with another system off the coast that would pump in the moisture. Classic setup for 1-2' of snow in the Northeast. Watch the Weather Channel boys.

Plan your rides accordingly.

Northeast weather forecasters might as well read tarot cards for their predictions.

You'll see. I'm Mr. Weather Channel (I'm sure that's no shock). This type of particular snowstorm scenario doesn't usually fizzle. I'd say 70%+ chance of a whackin blizzard Wednesday from DC to Boston.

Can't wait...

Better x-country skiing...

Better snowshoeing...

Better alpine skiing...

Better sliding....

Yet I still get a Tempo 5,8,2 trainer session in with sets of 50 squats, lunges, bent over rows, push ups and dead lifts...

Cross training in the off season is your friend...

For a day. Add today and tomorrow in and it will be 11 straight days on the bike in January. That doesn't suck.

Hmm, odd, normally we in the Midwest get all the crap packaged up into a neat box for you Easterners, then hit you with it hard. I don't think we've been preparing anything carrying precip, just a cold front or two.

That front is sliding south of you and hammering Missouri, etc. By Tuesday night it hits the eastern seaboard, and then whether this is 5" of snow or 15"+ depends on the potential formation of a northeastern front off the Atlantic coast. But when a western system combines with a coastal low, that's when the NE gets hammered, and that's how this is setting up. The coastal storm pumps massive moisture into the mix and it winds up as a big storm. Typical NE blizzard scenario.

The computer models have seen it. They aren't always right, but they usually are.

By the sounds of it, the storm looks like it will stay south of the lakes so us up north of the border in the Toronto-Hamilton corridor will get spared the brunt...At least that's what I'm hoping for...

I'm telling you, if I lived in Michigan, Wisconsin or half the places you guys live where it's really much harder to ride in the winter, I'd go insane. It's tough here sometimes, but it doesn't snow all the time. That's the kiss of road cycling death, persistent snow (even 1" every other day) and months of sub-freezing temps. Here we've had the sub-freezing temps, but not too much snow.

You don't have to travel that far to feel the kiss of death pcad...

The last time I saw green was before the ice storm.

So I'm sure it's been addressed many times before but I must ask...

What exactly do you do for a living that allows all of your cool bike goodies and the saddle time. I leave the house at 0730 and usually don't get home until 1800 or later. I watch the weather channel and plan PTO days if it looks like a day that will be decent (25* or warmer) if I can schedule it. I'm impatiently waiting for DST so I can go back to 40+ mile rides after I get home from work. Man, you're killing me here. I used to think I had a good job. (6 figures and a nice bonus every year)

I like snow but when it lingers it makes for unsafe riding so I'd rather the cold which I enjoy riding in though I must confess I've been eager for some temperatures above the teens on my morning rides. As for the snow storm I'm really hoping nothing comes of it but The Weather Channel is usually pretty accurate, I watch it every morning as I get ready to ride. The one nice thing about the morning forecast:

Roughly 12" in Indianapolis overnight. Looks like there may be more over the next day or two. I heard as much as 5-7 additional inches of snow in Indy by Friday. ...and it's all headed to the northeast.

Snowing hard here now and I'm lovin' it (for now, in April I will be cussin')...

I just wish there was a way to make it not snow on my driveway...

There ended up being a few inches at most in NYC, which has subsequently been rained on for most of the day so it's melting rapidly.

3" of snow here followed by freezing rain and more freezing rain. 20º tonight, 32º high for tomorrow, colder tomorrow night. God this winter does SUCK. Even when it snows it doesn't snow, it just turns the world into a friggin skating rink so you can't ride.

Look at it this way, it would be allot worse if you had your new Cervelo, you had this kind of weather and couldn't ride it.....

So at least when it arrives in July it will be sunny and nice outside and you can go riding all day long.
