Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I got both of these Santini LS jersey on sale for a total of $84 shipped at Nashbar (MSRP = $250). The materials on the jersey is really soft and high quality. Wore the black one this morning at 35+ with a PI LS layer and was excellent. Love the fit as well. Would definitely start looking out for Santini branded stuff.

Bought some cold weather gear from competitive cyclist: Pearl Izumi transfer balaclava and Gore wear alp-x so light gloves. They will be put to use as I plan on riding still before winter hits.

Kind of a big day at the bike shop yesterday. Finally got and paid the bill on the rest of the new bike build. When the frame and group set arrived, I insisted on paying for them, but everything else came in later, and sort of piecemeal, and the owner kept putting off tallying it all up. But yesterday, when I went to replace saddle on the other bike (had been riding around on a test model for a couple of months), I finally got the bill for: wheel build labor, spokes, tires, rims, hubs, saddle, seatpost, stem, bars, headset, bar tape, white cable housing (gruppo came with black), cages, pedals and bottom bracket. Whew. Glad that's over with. Now do I hafta get bell, lights, computer, saddle bag and fenders, too?

Obviously wouldn't tally it all on the spot. How much did he charge per hour to put it all together? For me, from scrach took me about a while to cable my bike. And I thought I was doing it pretty quick. Had to adjust the stem/handlebar stack, height position first. Or the cable housing will be the wrong length. Then measuring the cable length, messing with the internal cabling etc. Then do the bar tape. If I was a shop, I'd charge 3 hours for that.

Maybe not on the spot (not sure why, though), but I'd taken delivery of the bike three weeks ago! The only labor charge was for the wheel building, which was done elsewhere. They set the bike up in the front of the shop one day and I helped with some of the assembly (brakes, derailleurs and their cabling).

I didn't before, and maybe confused things when I mentioned that paying the bill for the last half of the new bike build came at the same time I got a saddle for old bike. Which, by the way, I had to replace the brake cables on yesterday, too. Seems when washing the bike and riding it in the rain/wet roads, I allowed a lot of water to get inside the frame, and the cables looked really grotty when they came out. No wonder they were feeling crunchy and stubborn. Pads had glazed up a bit too, so with fresh, teflon-coated cables and sanded pads, they're good as new! Like I said - big day at the bike shop yesterday.

ARPRINCE - digging the navy Spiga jersey. How did you size this compared to american brands? Run small?
That's the thing I like about Nashbar, they often have close-outs on cool "exotic" items like this from Italy; nice change from the same stuff that's sold virtually everywhere i.e. Pearl Izumi etc.

i wear a SMALL size (37+ chest). Sizing is a tad smaller than Louis Garneau/PI/Giordana/CAPO but not that much. Definitely same sizing as with a DeMarchi. I wear small across all those brands (except LG carbon jersey = M). The Spiga is a great jersey + excelllent materials. Simple design but looks great when you wear it.
