Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ordered Giro Syntax MIPS helmet in XL... Hoping it's big enough to fit my Megamind-shaped head so I can get back on my bike after 4 years.

I've been doing my usual obsessive devoted research on new shoes between the Giro Trans Boa, Giro Empire, Fizik R5, several Northwave shoes, and a couple other boa/strap vs. full lace options. I ran across these Louis Garneau Course Air Lite II with just a few rides on them and looking brand new for $140 so I took a chance. Hope I like them.

Just ordered Sram Etap 11 from Amazon for less than $800. Hope it's for real and not a bag of rocks.

It was $788 when I ordered. But the order was just canceled due to technical issues. Right!! $1169 is still good but not good enough just yet.

I had to work on my daughter's daily runabout and change the bottom bracket. The RH side cup was really stuck (as usual) and so I bought a nice new spanner to do the job for £6.69 (US$8.64) so not a lot of cash ... but that was the problem! When I tried to use it I found the spanner jaws were too soft and deformed and then the spanner would not work on the bottom bracket as it slipped off. (see photo of the deformed spanner jaws).

The solution was to borrow a mate's lovely massive adjustable spanner which just opened to 36mm and bolt it down using the axle nut and some spacers so it could not slip off. Using a club hammer it released after 2 hits.

The vendor from whom I bought the spanner has agreed to refund me so a good outcome.

And here is the £15 new chain ring - not anything special but an exact cheap replacement for the old worn out one. It also uses the new 20 Tooth Bike Bicycle Bottom Bracket Crank nut so I had to buy an Extractor Remover Tool as well (£3.48) - great price for a tool that actually worked!

Cheap but effective crank removal tool

The bargain new chain set removed from a new bike when it was upgraded!

If you are removing a splined BB cup that is difficult, it's better to use a box wrench(not a crescent wrench). I've broken the splines off of a Park crescent wrench trying to remove a frozen BB cup.

Another month or two of indoor riding left. Found a good coupon and finally upgraded to a direct drive trainer. Tacx Neo 2. Like DC Rainmaker says.. it looks like a Tie fighter lol can't wait to set it up. Accurate, quiet and doesn't need calibration.

Fiziks have very high arches. For me, painful and unwearable.

The first gen Fizik were very high and unwearable for me, too. The current models are much less extreme, though, and were not at all problematic for me when I last tried them (medium arch).
