Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Connex vs KNC Missing LInk

I just purchased a KMC DX 10 chain since alot of you guys recommended it and I was wondering if I need to use the KMC missing Link or will a Connex link also work with it?

Also, where can I find the best price on a Shimano 12-27 Ultegra cassette? PBK is out.

i went to my shop for one and they were out of KNC so they said a SRAM would work fine. I'd guess the connex would work also? I haven't tried mine yet but they said i could return it if it did not work.

As long as the connex link is marked 10 SPEED, not 10S1, it will fit the KMC chain.

Your shop is wrong about the SRAM 10 link. It is too narrow between the inner surfaces of the plates and will not provide the proper side clearance. It might close around the chain, but probably won't have the minimum .004 inch clearance.

The SRAM link fits a SRAM 10 or Campy UN chain only.

Shimano, KMC and the latest model Wipperman chains can exchange master links, since they all have about the same width across the inner sideplates. SRAM and Campy are both narrower. While the wider links will obviously close around the narrower models, the fit is sloppy.

damn.. i'll have to go exchange that when they get new ones in. So basically the SRAM one will feel like a stuck link

I can't comment on the compatibility, but I know that my KMC X10 SL chain manual was very explicit that you should only use KMC missing links. May just be marketing, but if you use another brand's link be sure to carry an extra one in case it snaps and you get stranded..

What's the feedback on the KNC Missing Link? Are they easy to remove and install and fully reusable like the Wipperman ones?

I've used the Wipperman ones for years and never had a problem, so would like to know if the Missing Links are just as good.

I hated the KNC/KMC/whatever link. The best I've ever used is the Wipperman link.
