Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: are better than yours.

It's the least of my concerns in selecting a frame. If you have proportionally short legs it might be a bigger concern.

Being a Shortass- I have always found sloping top tubes easier to straddle. Doesn't matter in any way when you are riding but for those of us with the same problem as me it does save a bit of pain.

i like standard because bikes just seem to look better with standard. but, because i'm so short, my frames all have a slightly sloping top tube.

As long it's somewhere between 56 and 56.5 and the seat angle is 72.5 to 73.5, I can make it fit. It could look like a pan of baked spaghetti as long as these two things are in place.

+1, except I'm actually really tall, and my new bike will be my only bike.

No preference, just which entire bike fits best.

I like the standard top tube, but my latest bike is compact. However, my next bike will more than make up for that.

I am shorter. So I like sloping. Plus, generally (notice: only Generally!) sloping top tubes give better response in a sprint than standard.

I like the appearance of standard, 56 cm+ but prefer the knee clearance of compacted geometry/undersized frames.

regular toptube doesnt give too much clearance at my height

I voted "standard" for aesthetic reasons.

I have 3 compact & 2 standard road bikes. After many miles / years of riding, I've concluded that the best top tube for me is 56cm and made of Ti.

Standard.

It's what I prefer a bike to look like.

Plus, I'm a tall guy and I think I look like a doofus on those . . . but that's just me.

Standard because it's easier to carry and get at large water bottles and at my frame size at least (52-53cm depending on the bike), I have room left to mount a headlight battery under my top tube even with two bottles in place. Oh, and level top tubes look so much cooler

I've got short legs for my height. A sloping TT means I can buy a standard model bike that has enough reach for me to not feel crunched when riding, but be able to stand over when stopped.

i prefer standard:
-more waterbottle clearance
-easier to shoulder / carry the bike (stairs are common here)
-looks better

I hear that a sloping top tube makes the bike stiffer, but has anyone seen a direct comparison?

Sloping can contribute to better stiffness. But, really, it comes down to the geometry of the bottom bracket, chainstays, downtube. Really, it is more about fit than anything else. If the bike doesn't fit you, you won't be able to get as much out of it, no matter how stiff it is, than if it did fit. Sloping toptubes can help with fit in some cases.

Own both but prefer the look of standard. I see sloping and think MTB.

slight slope = being able to clamp the bike in my shop stand without ever having to adjust the saddle height. tube slope aesthetics are unimportant to me, decals are far more critical.
