Fredelicious Cavendish

I got a kick out of the Versus piece about Cavendish during their TOC coverage today.
He don't mind being seen using fenders. :D

caloso 02-14-09 07:03 PM

I'd think a guy from the Isle of Man would know the value of fenders.

deanp 02-14-09 08:18 PM

The rear even had a mudflap, and maybe a reflector!

I did like the part when they stopped at the BMX track where he started racing.

captnfantastic 02-14-09 08:46 PM

you can't do sprint training without fenders... everyone knows that

Need to run to the store and buy some fenders so I can sprint like Cavendish!!

Plus the pump mounted under the top tube, no support vehicle following him around.

The fastest man in the world can ride a recumbent on his own time and he'll still be the biggest BAMF with a piece of carbon between in his legs right now.

only freds ride without fenders during the winter.

patentcad 02-15-09 06:16 AM

What's Fred about fenders on a bike on wet roads? Ironically, as b points out, such an observation is the pinnacle of Fredosity.

I would expect nothing less Chipcom. Well done.

cyclezealot 02-15-09 06:18 AM

When one chooses to live in a fairly dry climate, you have the luxury of having to not be a fred.

kwrides 02-15-09 07:06 AM

That was a very good piece. It was nice to see him living a simple lifestyle. What a charmed life.

kwrides 02-15-09 07:24 AM

I also liked Odessa calling Levi tiny and comparing him to his Paris Hilton dog :-)

FlashBazbo 02-15-09 07:34 AM

Okay, enough of the silly talk. Let's get down to the important issues . . .

Are the fenders dimpled and made of carbon fiber? Who makes them? Are Cavendish's fenders better than Lance's?

I also thought, there is a guy who cleans his own bike, and he knows the fenders make it easier to keep his bike clean.

azdroptop 02-15-09 09:36 AM

I couldn't get past his goofy robe.

I should have appended my observation with...why are so many road nazis in the US so afraid of fenders? :D

BillyD 02-15-09 09:49 AM

No self-respecting poseur would be seen dead with fenders . . . he'd be the laughing stock of Starbucks.

Then again, no self-respecting poseur would be riding in less than perfect weather conditions either.

waterrockets 02-15-09 09:50 AM

I saw yesterday and knew this thread was coming ;)

patentcad 02-15-09 12:40 PM

My Ibis is fenderized all winter.

nayr497 02-15-09 12:41 PM

I've always wondered what level of bicycle knowledge and repair knowledge professional riders have. For a professional rider I'm guessing they sometimes train with their team and sometimes they train alone. When training alone, they probably don't have a support car. So...do pros change their own flats when out training? (I'm guessing, yes.)

What sort of repairs do pros, like Cavendish, do when at home? Is he coming home and truing his wheels after hitting a hole? Or does he send out the wheel/request a new one? And yeah, does he clean his own bike?

I'm guess I'm just jealous that pros just get to ride and then head to the team bus for a massage. No cleaning or maintenance work. But, seeing Cavendish at home I'm guessing he does in fact do work. Plus, you could see a huge tool chest behind Leipheimer. And, I'm sure it depends on the rider. Some could be mechanics post-career, and some probably can't fix a flat.

I've got a friend that rode pro in europe during the '90s and had to stop due to being diagnosed with cancer. He beat it but never made it back to his previous form. He became a pro mechanic.

kster 02-15-09 03:20 PM

It looked like he was using SKS Race Blade fenders.
