Why would my wrenches talk trash about Neuvations?

I've been thinking about getting some R28 SL wheels and asked my LBS their opinion of them and all I got was "I bet they are flexy as hell" and "you get what you pay for". I asked them if they have ever ridden them or inspected their build quality and much to my surprise they've never even seen a set. So why all the trash talk if you've never even seen them? I've read several positive reviews on them and just wanted their opinion.

Because they don't sell them! If they sold them I'm sure you would have heard nothing but praise.

The neuvations won't make them any money. I think my r28sl4's are great.

milchad 02-22-09 06:29 AM

Good point. They did get into how they could build me some sweet wheels with Chris King hubs, Velocity rims and DT swiss bladed spokes for over $700.

Yeah, I mean, go figure.

Val23708 02-22-09 07:25 AM

they didnt mention the tacky decals?

TCR 02-22-09 07:27 AM

I've seen them. I've ridden them. They suck. You're LBS is correct.

Williams.

Come on, your LBS is a business. They are not in the business to tell you to buy things online. Of course they would be hesitant to give you advice to purchase something elsewhere. While I do think what they did was a little harsh, I don't expect very many LBS to tell to go buy something online that they don't sell. They will try to spin it to something they do sell.

Sorry, I work in a shop and thats the one thing I hate about customers. They come in and waste our time on things that they have no intention on purchasing from us. Ok yes we don't care so much with our regulars on things we cannot get, but some people come in all the time and never buy things from us but continuously ask advice. We should start charging a consultation fee

Or have lower prices and a wider variety of stock.

Which would put the shop out of business

You do get what ya pay for. If you buy from neuvation you get wheels. If you buy from your LBS you get wheels and pompous dickery. The pompous dickery cost extra of course.

patentcad 02-22-09 08:58 AM

I saw a set of Neuvations outside my LBS that a BFer from NY City was riding. He had taken the cheesy stickers off, and the wheels looked fantastic. So it's the cheesy stickers. Everybody that has those Nuevations seems happy with them.

That's definitely not the case.

I run the R28 and M28 Aero3 wheels on two of my bikes and absolutely love them. I did remove the gaudy decals from both pairs. Now they are stealthy as well comfortable and bulletproof.

They look a lot like the Forte Titans without the decals.

A couple of the people who have Nuevations seem happy with them.

I couldn't comment unless I had inspected the rims for important feartures like welded and machined joints on the braking surface and inspected the hubs to see how the freewheel mechanism functions and determined the type and quality of wheels bearings. Most rims these days have machined braking surfaces, but some don't have a fully welded seam. Mismatch at the seam can result in an annoying ticking upon braking. Even early model Campy wheels, like the Shamal and Eurus had this problem.

Of course there is also the actual weight to compare.

Flex would be a function of the spoke number and pattern, flange width and spoke tension.

Welded seams aren't that important. Velocity rims are pinned, and none that I've seen are mismatched at the seam. It's a rim quality issue, not a joining method issue.

And I've heard that the current generation of Neuvation wheels aren't half bad. I'm considering a rear wheel, or perhaps even a set.

i love how everyone takes off their decals cause they are embarassed that they bought them...

That might be part of it, but I think the other part is that Neuvation decals are Fugly Beyond Words. They really are. The wheels look much better without them.
