Zipp used to make bike frames, the blade-type of TT frames that were popular in Indurain's day. But that's past tense.

The point? They don't do that anymore.

There are a number of carbon facilites supplying the Indycar teams with parts. Zipp does what they do, and it's not Indycars.

Why mention Indycars? Because they are in Indianapolis, about a block from IMS.

Any further news on release dates? End of July?

I recently switched to Campagnolo.
I will admit though, I have always LOVED Ultegra. Almost more than DA.

To see Ultegra come this far is really cool.
I hope they add carbon to it. Ultegra worked really well, and took a real beating year after year for me.

Evidence that marketing works.

Marketing? I don't think I've heard one word from SRAM on their products. They're kind of a quiet company.

It would appear you do not read many cycling publications.

I completely disagree with you.

While changing hobbies from building computers to bikes, I thought I would be done with all the constant, mindless, expensive upgrades. Thanks for ruining my hopes and dreams.

Jynx 06-30-09 05:17 AM

Whatever I have a 2006 frame with 2008 Ultegra. I plan to run it into the ground and get all new 2011 or so components.

Unless you change to a hobby such as "thriftiness" or "cheapskate", you're never going to get away from people buying new, expensive toys. It's what people do. New toys are fun.

while it's not fair to compare DA to rival, i'll do it anyway.

DA = butter.
rival = ratchet.

don't get me wrong, i do like the rival i have on my US bike, especially considering the price.

regardless, sram still has some odd quirks, i.e. on saturday there was a guy whose drivetrain was making a total racket. every time he shifted you could hear it from a few bikes away. i thought that maybe his cassette was loose. it wasn't until later that i realized he had red. you don't see much sram in NL (yet).

RacerJRP 06-30-09 05:59 AM

I played with ultegra 6700 on a demo bike last week. It looks like 7900 with diffrent coloring. Meh. Doesnt do anything fo rme..I love my sram.

I can't say I disagree, but this is more of a preference thing. Shimano does shift super smooth, but I prefer the snappier sram shifting.

Flatballer 06-30-09 06:17 AM

The real question is, will 2010 Force or 2010 Ultegra make it to market first?

I've seen both of them listed on websites, but neither in stock yet.

kwrides 06-30-09 07:12 AM

I like my Rival more than my Ultegra for all things except the lever for shifting in the front.

Actually, that brings up a really good point. Shimano does actually use more carbon fiber than almost any other industry save for Zipp, who also makes high end carbon parts for race cars. So, why are their components not just oozing carbon???? I mean, they've got a HUGE carbon fiber tech department!!!!!

FWIW, SRAM owns ZIPP.

Talking about this? It looks an awful lot like they put different colors on the Dura-Ace 7900 parts if the picture is any indication.

If the new Shimano groups are really a step backward like everyone says, I'd be tempted to go to SRAM, although to be honest, I was really unimpressed with the fit and finish of the Rival group I fiddled with on a demo Serotta at my LBS on Saturday.

It's no different with Red.....Red works and is lighter than DA but I hate the shifts (SLAM), it looks so NASCAR and I dislike the the double tap although I might get used to it after a few weeks.

the finish on previous gen of rival left a lot to be desired. the logos on the double tap levers wore off within a few months.

good thing it's a tool, and not a jewel.

Terex 06-30-09 07:54 AM

Don't you guys ever look at www.rouesartisanales.com?

The reviewed the Ultegra group in April.

Also, DA = Butter
Force = Ka, Ka, Ka, Ka-chunk.

Wish I would have bought a couple of 7800 gruppos when they were going for about $900. :(
