Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking at a Cannondale CAAD 9

Can this frame be built up to be under 17lbs? Thoughts?

ofcourse very easily - depending on your budget really.

You can make it sub 15 if you throw some top end parts on it.

Mine is a 60 cm. I have Chorus 11 shifters, cassette, and FD, Record 11 RD and brakes, SR cranks. FSA OS99 stem and Wing Pro compact bar, Arione CX and FSA K force post. With Fulcrum Racing 1 wheels, it's 17.5 pounds.

Do you think it gained weight in the off season?

Yes, but I think you'd need to go with Dura Ace or something similarly light (and light wheels).

FWIW, I have a Six13 (almost the same weight IIRC) with an Ultegra build (compact double) and Ksyrium ES wheels and I believe it weighs about 17.8 lbs. That's with Shimano M540 pedals, which are probably heavier than some other options. It has a Toupe saddle and a fairly cheap Easton seatpost.

I don't follow this kind of stuff. Is low-end SRAM really lighter than Ultegra?

Really? I'd definitely like to know what reasonably priced wheels are more than a pound lighter than my Ksyrium ES wheels.

Since the ES weighs about 1485 grams per set (700c clincher), which is about 3.27 pounds, your "light" wheels would need to be right at or under 1000 grams. Wouldn't wheels like that be even more expensive than a CAAD9???

Actual weight for the Ksyrium ES is 1528. You can get Soul 2.0's for about $400 which will drop about 220 grams. If you switch up tubes and tires you can probably get close to the other half pound for less than $100 more depending on what tires you have now (50g savings per tube, maybe another 100-120g with Ultemos).

BDC- nice! What is your build?

KUDude- Gotcha. I agree that there are sub-1k wheels out there, but I doubt this dude wants to put $6000 wheels on his CAAD9!

Nice, thanks. Not sure if you remember, but we rode Diablo together a few Christmases ago with a BF group.

Just built my CAAD9 56cm frame w/ Dura Ace 7800 (BB24 adapter inserted into the BB30). Total weight came in at 17.15lbs (including Blackburn computer and cheapo bottle cages). Weight w/o my wheels (or skewers and rear cassette) was 11.77lbs. Complete cost was a little over $2200. You can get much lighter....going to cost you way more than $2200.

Caad9 60cm, campy centaur 2008, some kcnc parts, 1400g wheels = 15.7

It gets heavier during training mode...
