Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Using an Edge while running

Anyone use an Edge while running? Does it work in a pocket of once shorts what bounces around, etc? I don't run with a pack and I am in the deep dark VT woods. Figure as much exposure to the sky as I can get is needed.

No, I have had the mount break and threw it in the back of my jersey under a coat. No loss of reception.
I have also used it inside for no particular reason. I would assume you will be fine.

I've run with a 705 held in my hand, the current speed fluctuates a bit with armswing.

I am sure the quality of the reception decreased but it worked fine.

I don't see why it should be a problem considering it is designed to also work on mountain bikes.

I have three bikes and only two mounts for my 705. When I ride the third bike, which is rarely these days, I put the 705 in a jersey pocket and it seems to work fine...

I've taken mine on long walks and it's worked fine in the cargo pockets of my shorts, but I've also tried to stick it in side pocket of my trunk bag and it didn't get good enough reception to work. I suspect it has to do with the way it's oriented...works better when face to the sky.

I've carried it in my hand in order to watch the HR, Time and Distance.

Alterntively, I'd wear a cycling jersey, and drop it in a back pocket.

I've tried using my 705 in an iPod armband while running. Distance and heart rate worked fine, but the speed fluctuates too much. It had my max speed at 30 miles per hour. Forget about it if you want to use it for pacing.

Have used my Edge 305 a lot while xx skiing with no problems. Kept it in the inside zippered pocket of my vest. I didn't check the GPS accuracy/signal strength, but all the results seemed reasonable.

I have a Vista Tracker HCX. Before I got the 705, I'd occassionally put the Vista in my jersey pocket. No problems.

I ran with it once. Frankly, it's a PITA to hold onto something like that IMHO. Should work fine in a pocket.

Two things about the forerunner 305 (I had one). BIG and UGLY. I only have room for one watch in my life.

Also, I run trails and often slip and have to brace my fall.....that thing will break your wrist if you fall right.

Lastly, its altimeter sucks compared to the Edge. Less data.

I sold it. My Edge smashed last year. So, I need a new one. Was considering the Forerunner 405 as a one off solution, but it's still got the inferior altimeter.

I've run w/mine in a jacket pocket, and it worked just fine, but I was in a urban area, not the deep woods. It bounced around a little and I was worried about it falling out, (it's a pretty expensive toy) but it worked great. If you put it in a pocket where it fit tight, would it would toggle between screens, and beep and make noise? That would be annoying.

I've ran with a 705 in the small side pocket of my Nike shorts before; it worked well. I eventually broke down and got the forerunner 50.

I run with my 305 in my hand.

I also ride with it in my jersey pocket sometimes. I turn the face to the outside for reception. I sometimes lose HR data but WTF....who cares.

When I run, I hold my Edge 305 in my hand and it works fine even when running through wooded areas.
