Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brooks Swallow Ti.... price = wow, alternative for my Merlin?

I am a Brooks fan, currently riding B17 and B17n, and would love to put one on my new merlin. The problem with the brooks is the weight. I would love to buy a swallow but 500 for a saddle is insanly expensive. I was wondering if any of you guys made the switch from a brooks to another saddle? If so what brand/model?

what about the swift model? i like mine.

~$300 for the ti version, a little more reasonable.

If you are worried about weight, you don't want a Brooks...even the ti models are twice as heavy as say a Toupe.

I'll take a look at the swift. Might even look at the Swallow steel.

there are a few sites where guys have "chopped" a b17 or similar to get that racy Swallow shape.

I use one of these as an alternative to the Swallow. Very similar in size, shape and fit but far less expensive.

I used to ride a steel Swift on my road bike, and still ride a B17 on my ss mtb. The Swift never worked for me on the road bike. The prices and weights of Brooks saddles are simply unreasonable as far as I'm concerned.

I've moved over to a Toupe Gel on my road bike and am happier now. The B17 on my MTB is quite comfortable, but it is just too wide imho.

DaveT,

how you doing? been a long time, no?

I ride Brooks on a few of my bikes, and I find the Selle San Marco Regal a similiar size/shape without
the weight of the Brooks.

Howyadoin' Marty? Too long a time.

I tried a Regal on a couple of my bikes, but a bit too narrow to suit my butt.

Went back to the Professional which for me is perfect. If I want to shed weight on the bike, I can take a dump.

+1 The V6 from Velo Orange is very similar to the Swallow (although much heavier than the Ti version, but like another poster said, If you want something lightweight, no Brooks or Brooksesque saddle is a good option). It is very nicely constructed and has a laminate on the underside which supposedly will help prevent stretch. I also considered butchering a B-17 narrow, but went the V6 route. I actually went the other way and switched from a Fizik Arione to the leather saddle and am happier with the new saddle choice, despite the additional weight.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like a few of chosen the toupe. I have scheduled an apt. for monday at a "specailized concept store" for a BG fit test and a saddle fitting. IF plastic and Ti don't work for me I am totally going back to leather.

Yup. $243.00 delivered in less than a week. Now, do I break it in with tomorrow's 200K chili feed?
