Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Traumatic brain injury - stats

Cyclists take comfort... only 3% from Sports injury...

From MSNBC link
Who's at risk?

About 1.4 million people sustain such injuries each year in the United States. Of those, 50,000 die, 235,000 are hospitalized and 1.1 million are treated and released from an emergency department, reports the CDC.

According to the Mayo Clinic, young men ages 15 to 24 are at the highest risk, with the BIAA reporting that males are about 1 1/2 times more likely than females to sustain a TBI.

In addition, certain military duties increase the risk of sustaining a TBI. In fact, with so many soldiers coming back with brain injuries, the condition is now often referred to as a signature wound of the Iraq war.

The National Institutes of Health lists the following as leading causes of TBI in those under age 75:

* Transportation accidents: 50 percent
* Violence: 20 percent
* Sports injuries: 3 percent

The NIH also notes that half of TBI incidents involve alcohol use.

These facts should prove the need to wear a helmet while driving.
