NEVER pay MSRP or anywhere close. Most bike stores will list something for about 15-25% less than MSRP anyways, and then you can negotiate them down. I'd be willing to bet that given the current climate (economy) you can negotiate them down quite a bit.

Get used from Craigslist. Spend the rest of your money on a decent set of wheels.
Lots of people purchase nice bikes and end up putting less than a 1000 miles on them before deciding to sell it.
Just make sure to take a friend with you that knows something about bikes.

Check with team discounts, I rode in college and got a Bianchi T-cube Chorus for 1800. Also, I wouldn't dream of doing a college crit on a bike I didn't mind crashing. I saw one pretty much shatter once at UofM
