Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The nerve of some people.

Just got back from a ride. Decided to make my loop a little longer, and I eventually ran out of water. Stopped at a country store type sandwich joint to get a fillup from the sink. Got to the counter and asked the girl (standing right next to the sink) if I could get a fillup. She replies "I don't know if we can do that" and walks to the door to the back room to ask. She comes back a minute later and says "No, but you can buy a bottle." WTF!?!?!? Having no money, and now no water, I don't even bother to say anything and proceed to walk out the door. I don't get it, not like I was asking for a free sandwich, it's ****ing water. In the time it took her to go and ask she could have just filled my bottle and I would have been gone. What is wrong with people?

So now you'll know to take some money along, right? Or possibly try "I'm out of money, but I sure am thirsty. Could I just get some water from that faucet?"

some people are just mean spirited by nature. i once stopped at a cafe, got a sandwich and a coke and at the counter asked if she could fill my bottle from the tap. i was stunned when she said no and then proceeded to tell me how much the sandwich and coke came to. i put the stuff down and went next door and bought an inferior soggy sandwich but got my bottle filled.

Churches almost always have spigots and are normally accomodating if you can find someone to ask. I've never been refused.

Fill your bottle, then "forget" to turn it off.

They wanted you to buy their water, that was the whole point. They're not mean, they're just thinking like a business.

Should have used the bathroom and just filled up at the sink, or from the back of the toilet tank- depending how thirsty you are.

This is why I smuggle food and beverages in. Always go to the movies with a woman - those purses are a necessity!

i know of people that have done it, and lived (on local passes that is, from the little waterfalls on the side of the road). i've heard people say that running water will be cleaner, but who knows.

for long rides where i think i'll be short on water, i bring filtration tablets for an emergency like that, but i haven't had to use them. bringing three water bottles is another option.
