Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help me design a FRED rig

OK, all the talk about Fred's got me thinking. Can I design a Fred rig and outfit to mess with other riders? Can you help?

First item: A big pair of Converse or other type of basketball shoe with the bottom cut out to fit nicely around my Sidis. I can wear those over my cycling shoes and it will mostly look like I'm in tennis shoes on rubber pedals.

Next item: some crappy plaid frat boy shorts over cycling shorts. Not too baggy, just stupid looking, and maybe a kind of snug wife beater tee. Still don't want too much flapping material.

All right... what about a stealth bike?

Beach cruiser

Burn them on that and you'll get a lot of looks.

I understand you really wish you were a Fred, but it is something you can't fake. You either have it or you don't. Just like you can pretend you are a real TdF rider by buying a Cervelo, Sidis and a full kit, we can still figure out you are a poseur. First step to becoming a real Fred; realize you will never race in the TdF, regardless of how much stuff you buy.

Kickstand
Rear Rack with a cooler on it.
Elbow and Knee pads.
And don't forget the Bell Biker Helmet (might be hard to find.)

don't forget a full face helmet, frame pump, plenty of front and rear lighting and reflective straps and tapes everywhere.

Don't listen to these guys. Just go to Craigslist and buy an old Schwinn Continental and you will be all set.
