Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Out here in the Saudi Arabia of wind power, as T. Boone Pickens once referred to Kansas, you wouldn't ride much if you used the threshholds in the poll. Did a century Saturday with winds predominately in the 35-45 range, with afternoon gusts over 50. Can't say it was a lot of fun.

Winds off the ocean are common here ... and why is it they always (unfavourably) turn when I do?

It's been beautiful -- around 20C -- the last few days, but windy. I'll take the wind; this is the first taste of summer!

Just rode 46 miles today in 20+ mph sustained NW winds, gusts to 33 mph. Oh yeah, it was 44 degrees too. But the sun was out.

I live north of omaha and the winds suck on the roads out there. The hills make it way worse since teh wind rushes up them.

I'll ride in pretty heavy winds, 30+, but it becomes a discouraging factor for me above 20. If I already have other discouraging factors (meetings during the day, chance of rain, etc.), winds above 20 or 25 make it easier to stay off the bike.

I might or might not ride on a windy day of steady 30+mph. Depends on:

1. Which direction is the wind coming out of? I've only got a couple routes, so if I have to climb back home into strong winds, I might wimp out.
2. Am I riding with other cyclists? Drafting sure helps.
3. Is there rain along with it? Actually, up at 7500, if there's precip it's gonna be hail. NO THANKS!

having lived in south florida i.e. naples/marco island for 22 years my cut off for riding is about 30 mph of wind. of course with the new bladed spokes you certainly have to fully concentrate with a 25 mph cross wind.

I'll go for a ride on the backroads for fun or training in pretty stong winds, but for riding to work (or anywhere else in traffic), I'll usually whimp out at around 30 mph. I've been blown from the shoulder right into traffic on top of an overpass with traffic flying by at 55+ mph when we had 50 mph gusts. NOT fun. It becomes a safety issue, as well as an inconvenience.

I'll ride in 20+, but I plan my route to have a tailwind on the way home.

I think anything over 15 pretty much sucks.

I'm on the east coast of FL. So I have the Atlantic ocean on one side and the intercoastal waterway on the other side. Anything less than 20mph is calm for me...

too much is just enough.

I've raced in something 30-40, mind you with hail and ice. It was hilarious.

I'd start getting concerned when it gets windy/gusty enough to force you off your line & possibly into traffic or off the road

I rode 24 miles before lunch today (12 to work, 12 back home), then drove the car back to work because the forecast was for strong winds in the afternoon. Lo and behold, around 1 pm the wind picked up DRASTICALLY, with gusts clocked at 74 mph. It's been dry around here, and the fires today were terrible, with some of them still burning at this hour, and expected to burn all night. We lost power for over 5 hours at work, due to power lines being down. No way I would've rode in that.

The winds were like that just north of Melbourne on February 7th ... just before the fires wiped out thousands of hectares of land including approx. 2000 homes (my husband's included), and killed something in the neighborhood of 175 people.

If the fires are anywhere close to you ...... pack.

That's good advice Machka, and I'm sorry to hear about your husband losing his home. Fortunately for us, the fires at this time are mostly to our east (Oklahoma City and the suburbs are burning). Thanks for your concern.

Today I was in the worst headwind I think I have ever been in. I was going down a hill which I usually do 40+ almost the whole way down (its pretty long too, 2 or so miles I think.) and i could barley get over 26mph. When it got to the small false flat at the bottom I thought I was going to start rolling backwards at any point.

I did climb the hill like a madman when i was going the other way though!

I like the mtb in the woods when the wind is strong, but the group usually talks me into the road ride. We just pick the route carefully. What really sucks is climbing into a freezing headwind, or a hot, dry wind. When touring in Kansas we went into a super hot headwind for about 40 miles. We couldn't drink enough water that day.
