Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Riding With LBS Clubs

Last two days I've logged a combined 214km riding with an LBS club. I've rode in groups for the last two summers but the group I normally ride with is pretty laid back making a few stops along the way and generally pretty easy. Well these shop riders are another breed. I've learned a few things and some I need to learn. I've learned it's not always better to spin an easy gear up a hill you'll wear yourself out trying to keep up and the one thing I need to learn is how to consume more calories while riding at a faster pace. Has been a fun two rides thou, extrememly hard at times but just as fun when the going is good, smooth roads, downhill, wind at your back 70km/h can be a lot of fun, just make sure you get hooked onto that train or you are toast. At one point I thought I was gonna die! Talked with the guys after the ride and they were all very supportive, giving me tips and pointers and reminding me they've all been at that bonk point. I've always relied on solid food for fuel, well that is just not going to happen when riding with these guys, gels and perpetuim from now on. And I've never used Recovrite before man that stuff rocks. Gonna be a fun summer that's for sure.

Yeah that's the truth and I'm not ashamed to say it. I was impressed to just hang on for the first half of ride. It's my goal to not just hang by end of summer! Hey everyone has to have a goal.

I can't ride at race pace yet the 28mph groups, but I can hang with the faster 22mph groups now. When I first started riding they would simply look at me as the fat guy that would probably get dropped. Then after finishing a few centuries with some of the local groups at 20mph I get some respect when I show up.
