Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shims

My left leg is 13mm shorter than my right leg.

Anyone know where I can get shims to even this out?

My cleats are Look KeO. TIA.

Or, better, included as part of a fit? Wait, didn't you do that a couple times already?

She didn't have any shims on hand and didn't think the 13mm difference would be noticeable.

I'm not sure shimming the left leg will make a huge difference, but wanted to give it a shot.

The LeMond LeWedge's also include varus tilt, right? I don't need that - the 1.5 degree varus tilt is built into my Specialized shoes already...

Lemond wedges can be alternated so you can shim without changing angle.

Shimming nearly a half an inch is not practical. Set your saddle height for the short side. Shimming is usually done with wedges to correct pronation, not leg length.

Have you looked into seeing a podiatrist? Maybe you would benefit from custom orthotics.

I probably could benefit from something custom. I know that the fitter scanned my feet for eSoles and said I could benefit from up to 3 degrees of varus, and that my forefoot was incredibly flexible - no idea what implications that carries though.

Bike Fit's LeWedges are the only shims I've EVER found. I use them and they make a BIG diff.

https://www.amazon.com/LeMond-Fitess-.../dp/B000P0ZHDU

Also, when you put them on, be careful. Every shim is angled, so if you want it flat, simply turn one backwards and they'll make a rectangle out of two thin triangles.

BD.....Before you start shimming. Do you know where your leg differential is? Femour, Tibia or possibly a pelvis issue? Many leg differentials is actually a pelvic tilt. It matters where the issue is as they are all treated differently.

Ok then......LoL

Lets assume you have no pelvis twist or tilt.
Left thigh is 11mm longer then the right thigh
Right shin is 24mm longer then the left shin

You have 2 separate issues here the way I see it. You can't shim for thigh length issues as that is not a height issue like your shin is. You have a 24mm shin difference so I would start with a 12mm shim on your left shoe and see how it feels. Your body has compensated all of your life for your leg differential and is doing so now. That is why you don't want to shim for the full difference. Let the body continue to compensate some so you do not accidentally go to far the wrong way. Let your body soak up the difference.
As for the thigh difference, I would fix some of that with saddle fore and aft and some with cleat placement.
Talk this over with your fitter but it is how I would tackle your situation.

I've recently been wondering about varus shims. I use the Specialized BG shims, but I've heard that since they only affect the front of the foot they are not as effective as the shims that mount under your cleats like the ones shown in an earlier post. Are those ones more effective than the BG shims? How thick are they, I imagine they don't have much effect on stack height

You should read Andy Pruitt's "Complete Medical Guide for Cyclists". The cure for your problem depends on whether the upper or lower leg is shorter. A 13mm difference should NOT be ignored.

I got mine from Steve Hogg. I need 6mm under my left foot which made a world of difference in evening out my pedal stroke.

https://www.cyclefitcentre.com/cyclefit%20services.htm

SPECIALIST FITTINGS
Many riders have measurable or functional differences in leg length. To accommodate this Steve has developed the following:
Compensation shims: these are available in 2 mm and 3 mm thicknesses and can be used singly or stacked to any desired height; i.e. 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm etc. Models available suit Look, Look Keo, Shimano SPD-SL, Time Impact, Keywin and Campagnolo. These are available singly or in any quantity for $10- AUD each. Construction is of flexible CNC machined material so that the compensation shims easily conform to the curve of the sole of the shoe. As the cleats wear and are replaced the shims can be reused. The compensation shims can be supplied with any length of fixing bolt required.

I'll take a look at that. Is this the book: https://www.amazon.com/Pruitts-Comple...9801824&sr=8-1

I thought the title was another Shill thread at quick glance. Are you sure you're not a shim shill?
