What carbon rim profile is your favourite and why?
Given the choice, what would be your most prefered rim depth for a carbon tubular/ clincher rim?
This is for an all around racing wheelset, not taking into account the overall weight and the shape/ aerodynamic properties..... lets keep this simple....

Yup.
Except to say that if you're on a budget, the Flash Point FP60 and Williams 58 have the same rim profile as the 404. Zipp's models, of course, are built with fancier materials and have nicer hubs. And don't forget the dimples.

Well, the 404 rim is 58mm deep. That number has nothing to do with the rim depth. In fact, the origin of "404" I don't know. The only one that correlates is the 1080 with its 108mm rim depth. The FP's were just rounded off for simplicity--I guess they thought FP60 sounded better than FP58. Williams is spot on.

Because I own a pair of Reynolds DV46Ts and obviously I know what I'm talking about.

~45mm for me. My 404's can be a real handful is sever wind... but my Reynolds DV46 is much better.

Just gain some weight--then the 404's are no problem in strong winds.

When I go deep profile, I'm thinking 50+ mm.

I would say 40-50 mm at most for all around. I have 68 mm deep rims and they are much extra work on anything but days were the wind is completely dead. The "perceived" difference between a 32 mm and 50 mm is significant, but I can also feel "pulls" with the 50 mm in the wind. Can't say the same for the lower profile one.

If I can only have one wheelset for all races, it would be about 65-70 mm. But I'm a big guy and I prefer crits. If I was doing more RR I would probably say 55-60 mm.

It's really interesting and I guess I never really thought about how people's preference really depended on where they lived. I am seeing that if you lived in a much flatter terrain and ride mainly around that area you would prefer a deeper profile like a 55-60mm, but if you lived where you had to climb a fair bit then the preference would be 45-50mm.... funny how these things don't occur to me.

Weight also makes a big difference. I'm light and like to climb, so an all-round carbon wheel would probably be 40 mm (Williams 38, 303).
