Pedal weight, how much does it matter?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pedal weight, how much does it matter?

Its time to replace my 6yr old Looks, not sure what pedal system i will move to, but one key factor seems to be the weight factor. Is it worth the money to save a few grams when it comes to the pedals? Anything else I should look for when choosing new pedals?

I think my current choices are:

crank brothers egg beater SS - (266 g - $108 at LBS)
speedplay x/2 - (198g - $159 at LBS)

68 grams, $50 more... worth it for a club rider / weekend racer?

I personally do not think it matters much (especially only 60 grams) but I'm sure some others disagree. I have some brand new speedplays coming on the bike that I just bought. I'll be here June 1st. I don't want them because I bought some mallet C's (I needed a platform). If you're interested, we can work something out. They'll just sit in my closet anyway.

I personally don't think that it matters that much either. Of course my XC dualie bike weighs in at a tad under 35lbs so 60g isn't going to help it very much.

BTW if you get the x2 can you post some pro's con's about the pedals? My dad wants to get either the x2 or the zeros.

If you spend $7k on a bike that weighs 13lb, you may want to get the lightest pedals.. But for us commoners I don't think it matters..
Now if you decide go with the X2, you may want to consider switching to Zero Chromoly, which are better and cost the same..

I just switched from X3 to Zeros.. and I love those pedals.. the Zero have a limited float which I like when I get out of the saddle to climb. For such a tiny pedal they are very strong. At one point I was weighing over 250lb and those X3s worked very well. I have the Zero for only a few days (40 miles?) and so far I like them better then the X3s.

As I said in my previous post, I would rather go with Zero Chromo then the X2s
as they cost almost the same..

Some of my thoughts on various Speedplay pedal systems.

The weight makes no difference. But, there might be some other advantages making the extra $50 worth it.

I ride the Chromoly Zeros as well and really like them. When considering the weight though, you need to consider the weight of the whole pedal system with the cleats included. On the "X" seires the cleats weigh 85gms., and on the "Zero" series the cleats weigh 105gms., so when compared to other systems where the cleats don't need any metal for a clamping mechanism, Speedplays are not really much lighter, and sometimes even heavier. IMHO their value isn't so much in the weight but the friction-free non-centering float, double sided entry, super easy entry/ exit, things like that. Good luck with your choice!
