Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin 705

So I bought one today for my new bike when it arrives, actually had it set aside to be installed when bike arrives. I have a few questions. When inputting a route do you do it right on the unit or download route? Is it easy to get use to? Whats your favorite feature? Does it keep track of elevation as you climb or stored to be view on computer? I bought the complete package with map installed, do I still need to add anything or is it really all there ready to go?

You create routes on the computer, you can use sites such as bikeroutetoaster.com and mapmyride.com

The 705 adds up elevation as you ride, but you can also view the total amount and the graph on the computer

None of the packages come with the maps installed. Their is a package that includes a micro SD card with maps on it. If this is what you have then you have the maps. If you do not have a SD card, then all you have a is very ridimentary base maps with only major roads.

If you have the maps on the unit you can also select a destination and let it route you like a car GPS. So the answer to the question is, you can do it either on the unit or on the computer. But if you do it on the unit, you cannot select your route (i.e. pick roads) like you can on the computer.
