Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

34-48T Campy Crankset???

Would a 34-48T Compact Crankset hold its own on the top end? I know it would do well for the hills, which is what I am mostly concerned about as I live in Utah and want to use this going up the canyons. However, would still like to have some range for the flats. What might be a good cassette to get a good range. I'm just back into cycling and kind of swimming in information on all the new gear. Was sold on a 34-50T compact crank, and then came upon a great deal on the 34-48T. Thanks for any info.

Not much difference between a 48T and a 50T except a 34/50 is easier to find.

Cassette wise, 12-25 is pretty common and has plenty of range.

Don't have trouble with mine except on crazy downhills. I did get close to spinning out on a minor descent once, but that's because the race went bananas!

I would not want anything less than my 50/11 for descents. It's slightly more gear than a 53/12. I use a 50/34 with an 11-25 (11 speed). With a 48 big ring, an 11 would be a must. It's closest to a 52/12.

thanks for the info. I will try an 11-25 first then. This deal was too good to pass up, a Campy Centaur Carbon for $119. I figure I can always swap the big ring with a 50T if the 48 is bugging. Thanks again.

Price a Campy replacement ring and you'll be shocked. TA and Stronglight both make Campy compatible rings.

The rings prices are ridiculous.. When I needed new rings I bought a compact veloce crankset just for the rings on ebay.. 60.00 and free shipping..
