Homemade Energy Drink
From previous posts, a lot of you state that you make your own energy drinks...
Care to share the mix/how to make them?
Thanks in advance.

maltodexrin and koolaid mix for flavor, low sodium salt for minerals
I vary the concentration based on weather, on cool days I drink less fluid, but I still want to get 250 Calories an hour, so I adjust the mix/

"Lite Salt" is good because you get potassium as well as sodium.

I bought a 12# bag of maltodextrin from here, added some Koolaid for flavoring. Works quite well, but the maltodextrin needs a blender to get it to mix without lumps.

In a 32 oz bottle...
1 cup (8 oz.) orange juice.
Little less than 1/8 tsp. salt.
1/4 tsp. unsweetened orange Kool-Aid powder.
If you like a little more sweetness add sugar or Splenda.
Fill bottle with water.
Shake.
This should cost $0.30-$0.50 per bottle. Way cheaper then Gatorade etc. If you're averse to artificial stuff leave out the Kool-Aid and Splenda. It will be a little weaker taste-wise but still have all the nutritionals. What this has that most sports drinks don't is a lot more potassium (from the orange juice, as much as amedium banana). Helps with cramping.
EDIT: One thing I'd like to add to this mix is a protein source....if anyone has ideas let me know.

I've never needed a blender; Just shake it up, then put it in the bottle cage. A few miles later, it is fully dissolved.
Instant green tea is my flavoring of choice; In the summer it will be warm, and drinking warm tea doesn't seem as weird as other flavors.

Gatorade recipe:
2 1/2 cups sugar
4 packs Natural Lemon Koolaid
1 tablespoon salt. I use half regular and half lite salt(with potassium)
I mix it up and keep it in a covered jar.
Use about 2 to 2 1/2 tablespoons per large water bottle. 2 tablespoons is about 100 calories.
2 1/2 cups is 40 tablespoons, so this makes 16 to 20 bottles.

I buy Gatorade powder from Wal-Mart. 51 oz tin (makes 6 gallons regular strength) for $8.38. I typlically mix at about 1/2 full strength so lasts a long time. Easy to mix too. Per label 1 serving reg strength 50 calories, 95 mg sodium, 30 mg potassium, total carbs (sugar) 13g.

Not any cheaper by a longshot, but i've been using coconut water. Amazon puts it on sale very now and then. Supposedly more electrolites than sports drinks and more potassium than a banana.

50% orange juice- 50% water- good pinch of salt and a teaspoon of Fructose.
Or just plain water and stop at the cafe for coffee and a cake.

It isn't for everyone but...
I buy malto by the 50 pound bag
The following fills one bottle and provides appx 260 calories per hour for four hours. I drink 1/4 bottle on the hour every hour and have used it for rides as long as 18 hours. Drink plenty of water (1/2 - 2/3 bottle per hour) or it just sits in your stomach.
3/4 of a large water bottle (8 scoops using my old Perpetuem scoop) of maltodextrin
1 scoop of Soy Protein (without Fructose or sweetener - find it pure - I use Hammmer's)
4 tiny scoops of Hammer Endurolytes
1/3 teaspoon sea salt
At this strength it has a pancake batter like taste. It doesn't bother me since I'm looking for fuel and not a gastronomic experience. Sometimes I flavor it with a squirt of Hammer Gel.
Depending on how far I'm riding I start with a four hour bottle and bag up more in 4 hour baggie (using thin zip-lock sandwich bags) and then drop all the bags in a thick heavy duty gallon zip-lock bag. Two layers is good - I learned the hard way. I easily put 12 hours of fuel in a jersey pocket. I hit a water spot rip open a corner and empty the bag into the water bottle and am gone in three or four minutes. I never eat anything else since my calorie count is so exact already. I never ever bonk when I stick to my schedule.
