Maybe the HTFU part should come into play before one lights up his/her first cigarette.

I understand that nicotine is highly addictive and that it can be nearly impossible to quit once one is addicted. What I can't understand, however, is why someone would fire up the first cigarette to begin with given that, post 1950's, these facts are public knowledge. :twitchy:

And no, you can't 'just have one' in the bar three months later. Remember that. It's the first cigarette that makes you start smoking again. That is the key thing to wrap your head around.

eh...im a believer in "relapse" and a gradual quitting process. when i "quit" i still had to smoke when i was drinking...now that's done with also. it is extremely impressive to quit cold turkey. but its not wrong to put yourself on a "come down" plan. go from a pack a day...to 5 a day....1 a day...1 a week. then have your last hurrah with a drink and never look back.

cigarettes would be freeking awesome without the whole killing yourself part.

I've haven't smoked in 10 months....after 30 years of smoking...I cut down to about 4 a day, then I went on Chantix for 2 months and now I'm free.....I still think about every single day.

We are all addicts.

crtreedude 05-24-09 11:25 AM

I quit about 30 years ago because a young lady who I wanted to impress told me I didn't have the will power to do it. I bet her a steak dinner. I won, she lost, we ended up getting married, and still are.

^awesome story

johnybutts 05-24-09 12:19 PM

i smoke occasionally when i go clubbing or out with friends who smoke. But I never buy my own, and this means I can't get addicted.

This is just like me and my coke.

I do have to go clubbing more than I like, though.

I usually snus after a ride. I'm still contemplating whether or not I should order a roll of cans online of the real swedish snus.

I tried the camel snus. It was f'ing terrible. I'd rather have skoal berry pouches! :roflmao2:

I haven't dipped in 2 months and miss it something awful.

Everyone loves a good nicotine buzz... Do a lot of pros dip instead of smoke for their fix? I've been wondering about that for a while.

I go with Frost Camel Snus. Works for me. I'm not a fan of dip, though it does give you a great buzz :D

As for the pros, I feel that snus would be a lot easier to deal with while riding than dip.

I smoked Nat Shermans and Dunhills for a few years, but felt if I was going to start cutting weight and start cycling I need to stop so I did. Stopped drinking (just water now), smoking, and watching tv.

I smoked cigs and cigars, but mostly I was a pipe smoker. I quit cold turkey on Valentine's Day 1984. Overcoming the nicotine addiction was bad, but overcoming all the pipe smoking rituals was even worse.

Even after all of these years I still occasionally have a dream about smoking and then I have this horrible dread that I have to quit all over again.

Seriously. That's the secret. If you are "trying", you have already accepted failure. Commit to it.

Good luck with that.

This is me smoking before a ride. What's the problem?

johnybutts 05-24-09 05:41 PM

Goose you can smoke with me any time.

MrCrassic 05-24-09 05:48 PM

I hate the smell of all cigarettes except cloves.

It was more than covered by the what I was spending on smokes. As I said in my earlier post, I still miss it sometimes.

Others I know have sworn by Allen Carr's books.

Same here. I substituted with Altoids and then downgraded to Tic Tac. I also gave up coffee at the same time. Once the cigarette-coffee relationship had ended, I added coffee back into my routine. Bought myself lots of rewards for time without cigarettes, one day, one week, one month, etc. At almost $10 a pack, and a pack or so a day, you can buy a lot of good rewards. Most important is that I had reached the point where I wanted to quit. If you still want to smoke nothing is going to stop that. Will power will only take you so far.

Subby, is that jealousy I sense in your post?

Does your wife know about your tendencies?

The pouches are for girls and girly-boys, Grov Lös is where it's at ;-)

You know all of your smoking friends hate you for this right? Nothing as bad as a part time smoker who scrounges smokes.

The smell doesn't work for me either. I can't separate or differentiate the smoke smell from the ash tray smell.
