Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Koppenberg: Average is 11.6%. Max is 22%. Altitude at the top is 77 m (253 ft). That is smaller than the highest hill in "pancake flat" Florida.

Absolutely. No comparison.

By the way, VERY few 18% stretches on any road are more than a few hundred meters long. The longest steep stretch on my road probably averages 13-15% and is about 250-300 meters in length.

Yeah, I was watching that and wondering if she just left the bike at the bottom. The expression on her face says yes!

This thread lacks the email addresses of the riders so we can send them messages of pure and total contempt.

I did the Mountains of Misery ride yesterday which finishes with a 3 mile long, 11.9% average grade. Plenty of people had to get off to finish. I made it, but just barely. Had to resort to the "serpentine" technique in a few places.

I would have been prepared to walk if I needed to, but today I'm sure glad I didn't

I'm not sure why the photog even bothered taking a pic of people at their Waterloo. Who the heck would buy a pic of that?

Sure. Or something to frame and display in your self loathing photo album.
