Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Aero

When I'm on my S2 with the Zipp 404s on a long descent, I pass everybody. I even sail past guys that are pedaling when I'm coasting. I am not the heaviest guy (I'm about 175 lbs), so that's not it. I do think the bike/wheel combo aero thing may be working. I've observed this on Nyack and @ PP on the descent there.

Discuss. And be nice.

if you think 175 "isn't it" then you may as well stop riding altogether

I bet you're taller than me. I was really fat at 208 (13 months ago). Now I'm 146. But I'm on the shorter side at 5'7". I have to work to keep up with pretty much anyone that's heavier than I am on downhills. Uphill is another story.

I'm 5'11". 5'11" 208lbs is not quite as fat as 5'7" 208.

Wow. Dude. Nice weight loss story right there. I love that.

I can tell you what it isn't, and that's the cable routing. what good would this thread be without making fun of the cables?

A riding buddy who I have 25 pounds bike and body could never get a higher speed or pass me on descents until he got his ZIPs. They also help him hang on when it's flat. Definitely a nice advantage.

Finally! Pcad has found a race he can be competitive at: The Downhill Coasting Derby. That is, until some truly overweight Freds show up and once again leave him wondering, "wha' happened?"

Alright, I'll actually contribute.

I'm on the smaller end of things (5'4", 125 lbs) and I would always get dropped on long descents during group rides. I bought a Cérvelo Soloist last year and it made a huge difference. My downhill speed is about equivalent to the rest of the pack.

Is it all Cérvelo magic or am I just fit better to the bike and can get into a better tuck? I don't know which it is but either way I am pleased. Getting new aero wheels would increase the awesomeness, though.

The bike is something like only 15% of your aero drag. In all likelihood, you have a better tuck.

I'm not making this up. I've been doing this a long time. This S2 goes down hills faster. Which confirms to me that it's faster. Period.

And if that's just a delusion on my part, I'm sticking to it, that bike cost me a lotta dough.
