Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sunblock You Are Happy With?

Anyone have a sunblock they really like that works and isn't particularly sticky, goopy and doesn't mess up your bike frame or clothing? I like an alcohol based spray quite a lot but it seems to really dry out my skin and leaves me itching on my hands and arms.

Thoughts?

Which one did you try? I use Bullfrog quickgel - never get burned (did get a bit red in the face after 7 hours out and applying twice).

Banana Boat sport on the arms and legs, Bullfrog on face and bald spot :-( A farmers tan is bad enough, I don't want a Gyro tan as well.

So far, the only one I've used on my face that doesn't end up in a rash is Aveeno Positively Ageless - Face. My legs and arms aren't as sensitive, and I just use whatever is cheapest there - SPF 30 or above. I have medical reasons to be particularly sensitive to sun though, and I usually ride with my arms and neck covered as much as possible. I'm happy with a loose, long-sleeve shirt à la Rivendell. It may look goofy with my bike shorts when I wear those, but it's functional. I do have to watch out for the style and fashion police, though.

I've had some skin problems in the past, and my dermatologist recommended at least SPF 50.

Now I'm using Coppertone Sport SPF 50. Seems to last a long time, even with heavy sweating. Doesn't burn when it gets in my eyes.

I use Banana Boat for Kids. It's SPF30, has UVA and UVB protection, and has a powder finish instead of being all oily and gross. It's waterproof and sweat proof. I don't know why it's only for kids though...

I frankly used 30 or 40 SPF spray on stuff. I'm really tan so I can be out in the sun for 6-8 hours with just one application and be ok, it might not be sufficient for people with a lighter complexion.

I use Coppertone Sport. I don't think the bottle I have is SPF 50, but it seems to work.

I like the smell, too.

I grabbed some Bullfrog gel 30 from my daughter's bathroom this weekend and can definitely recommend it.

I like the Aveeno products. Spray for the arms and legs because it spreads without getting built up in the hair. Their SPF 50 creams on the rest. Aveeno spreads nice without the oily feel.

Haven't noticed the spray causing any dry skin issues.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer is my fave: good holding power, not heavy, doesn't block pores.

Bullfrog is also one I like, though it's very heavy compared to the Neutro.

Using Bull Frog Quick Gel Sport Spay on my face (cause it doesn't sting my eyes) and Kinesys Spray on my body...and while it does real well at blocking the sun, I think it is what is drying out my skin and causing some itching. By the way, the Kinesys will sting your eyes BIG TIME if used on your face

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen. The best. Period.

Contains 10% zinc oxide, and 5% titanium oxide, in line with Australian standards which are much tougher than FDA standards. Most American sunblocks contain only 1% or 2% zinc oxide. So you get a much better UVA protection. Plus, this stuff is rated for 240 minutes in the water, as opposed to 80 minutes like bullfrog, banana boat etc.

I love the fact that it dries and doesn't leave the greasy residue.

I like Blue Lizard because it goes on light and is pretty resistant to perspiration.

edit: Flak beat me to it. I really like this stuff though!

Anyone remember Zinka back in the '80s (if you lived in a surf town)? It would be hilarious if it made a comeback and you saw a bunch of cyclists riding around with pink, white, and blue colored noses

I can't say enough good things about Kinesys spf 30 Performance Sunscreen. (You can get it from REI I believe... or in Canada from MEC).

I've tried probably 15 different kinds and Kinesys is bar FAR my fav - absolutely NO residue or stickiness, spray's on super easy, works incredibly well, and even smells alright.

Every person I've ever let try it out says its the best stuff they've used.

Huge thumbs up from me.

I like the La Roche-Posay line. Effective, not too greasy, and it's got titanium in it. If only they made one with carbon fiber in it...

Banana Boat SPF 50 Sport, the lotion/whipe-on type, if only because it doesn't smell very strongly.

No on Coppertone, that stuff reeks.

I use alcohol base spray on stuff (banana boat, and Kroger brand). These work best for me because I would not use sunscreen if it were difficult/annoying to apply. I have not had issues with drying skin.
