Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Close out pricing

I have never bought a bike when the new models are getting ready to come out so hence the question. On average, how much do bike shops discount "older" models when the current year bikes are getting ready to come out?

My wife is wanting to get into cycling, and since I was going to get a new bike next year, she has mentioned that she will take my bike and I could get a new one. She doesn't want/need a new one, as she is not sure she will really get enough usage out of it.

You might watch craigslist or ebay for a used bike. If she tries it and doesn't like it you can sell it for what you paid for it. Or if she tries it and really likes it, you can buy her a new bike, and again sell the used one for about what you paid for it. Discounts on this years bikes aren't going to happen until late in the year.

The Craigslist option is probably the best one because you don't want to spend too much money on a bike if you're not sure she will stick with it.

Well, she is going to use my bike, a pretty decent fit for her as well, and I am going to get the new one. I figure worst case scenario, is if she doesn't like it, I have a bad weather/indoor trainer bike as well, or I could sell it later on.

We are both going to try to do a sprint triathlon at the end of the summer, and her current bike is a very old, very heavy mountain bike.

There it was clear as day and my reading skills failed...

I've seen close out bikes a few hundred dollars off their original price but that usually happens when it hasn't moved well after the new bikes have come in. An LBS by me has an 08 Scott CR1 Pro which originally sold for $2699 and is now $2199.
