Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For me, the fixed gear was a big deal, but foremost has got to be these forums. Yes, it's not a product, and I didn't buy it, but thanks to the great ideas, advice, stories, product info/reviews, personal encouragement, etc., I can and will continue to make better decisions about what was an occasional thing, and turned it into a serious hobby/obsession. I doubtless would not be doing some of the riding if it weren't for reading about all of you. Thanks to all for their input!

Ya know what? I really have noticed that I am much less fatigued after a ride now that I'm not riding a 100% aluminum (incl fork). Titanium and carbon fiber (stays and fork) does make a difference. I guess it could be marketing hype, but I really do feel pretty good after a long, hilly ride. The 50 mile ache is no more.

A Tandem.
It was a necessity after the last LIFE CHANGING event....kids.

My project bike should have a great "bike life changing" factor when finished.

Good point about the forums ! I would agree. I have learned much more in a couple months lurking here than I would otherwise have, especially this time of the year when alot of bike mags space out their issues. The range of stories, experience, & characters found here is refreshing.
It allowed me to research the whole double vs. compact double vs. triple thing before purchasing my first new road bike in a dozen years (went w/compact double ) Rad, where's your followup report on your new compact ??

I have also gained new appreciation for rollers training this winter having given it more time & dedication. I learned to climb out of the saddle, but now am focusing more on bringing my avg cadence up. The results were very apparent though when I was able to ride outdoors last weekend
So while we'll still have another 1-2 months of winter weather, I am confident I'll start the new season in the best riding shape in a long time !!

Here are some things that have been cool for me

nashbar's swing grip - add the lights or other accesories
https://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...and=&sku=12832

performance slx saddle - good value and very comfortable
https://www.performancebike.com/shop/....cfm?SKU=18270

endless innovations road ends - good for cheaply converting a flat bar to more road style
https://endless-innovations.com/mall/default.asp

zefal's tournee back rack - so travelling is much easier with foldable legs, and lightweight
https://www.zefal.com/AAA/produitFram...&languePage=fr

power grips - really give decent functionality and won't break when upside down
https://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...rand=&sku=1270

Last bike altering life changing product - those new bar end plugs that dampen vibrations via physics of harmonics. No need for carbon bars !

I love my Half Jackets but sometimes have difficulty choosing between them, my M Frames, my Half Wires, or my A Wire Thicks (I'm a HUGE Oakley fan ).

Personally, I'm quite satisfied with my Profile Aquacage. It is really nice being able to carry two extra bottles on my long rides.

Mine had bar-end shifters. I rode with them for a thousand miles or so, then changed them out for downtube shifters. They are still indexed - I'm not that much of a retro-grouch. My reasoning was that I found myslef having to make double shifts a lot, and also needing to trim the front deraileur. That meant moving both hands of the bars in alternation. With the downtube shifters, more often than not I can do a doubleshift with one hand. A have an older bike that has friction downtube shifters that is pleasant to ride, so I understood what I was getting into by making the change.
