Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tulsa riders hit, killed by apparent drunk driver

We race with the Bicycles of Tulsa crew a lot around the state. Godspeed and God bless the loved ones that have to deal with the aftermath.

Another death thread. Thanks.

Belongs in A&S.

And thank goodness we have people like you on this forum, dcbikeguy. You can't imagine how much a contribution such as this is appreciated.

How about a simple "tragic, prayers for the family and friends" post? Or maybe you just don't say anything at all and go on about your business?

This post relates as much to road biking as it does to Advocacy and Safety and you knew exactly what this was going to be about when you clicked the thread.

It is sad and my thoughts go out to his/her/their family, but DC is right. I don't want to read about this all time, that's why I don't go to A&S. No, I don't have to read the thread, but I do read the title when I browse the forum. That's enough to bother me, can these please stay in A&S?

+1

It seems that some people have little faith in the ability of mods.

Mods can move it if need be. Seems directly applicable to this forum as well as A&S. The folks in and around Tulsa that are dealing with the loss of a loved one don't have the option to have the mods move this out of their lives. Really seems quite petty to complain about this thread being in this forum.

All I know is that the Oklahoma race and ride scene has lost two riders and friends.

As a local rider who does not routinely read the Tulsa world, I appreciate the OP. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of these riders (whom I have met at group rides in Tulsa). The road where they were hit is a very common route in these parts with a fairly large shoulder. I personally resent the criticisms of this thread. I guess if you can't show some bike porn or reply "flip it" the thread has no value.

I don't want to read about this all time

Then don't. Did someone hold a gun to your head and force you to open the thread?

No you jackass read the thread title. Kinda hard not to know what it's about when browsing the thread titles you maroon.

That's why I don't go to A&S, I don't want to read about this stuff.

Are you in Tulsa? (I'm not egging on, I'm legitimately curious). Have you had something like this affect you directly in the past? I can understand your reaction in those cases, or any that are similar. I won't rush to judge the motivation behind your posts. And I don't mean to pry, I'm just wondering why you're so, er, vocal (at least through type) about the thread's placement.

This kind of accident is all I can think of when Im riding on the road. Between drunks and people texting on their iphone its only a matter of time before someone swerves. I'm sure I'm not the only one to have their bars clipped by a mirror before. Then you also have those who are outright malicious and throw bottles. I don't know how you road riders can do it. When ever possible I use the sidewalks and I don't care how many dirty looks I get from joggers.

God rest their souls.

It's simple: I do not need a reminder that I could be killed while riding. I come to BF for entertainment and to relax. If I wanted to discuss riders safety and DWI laws in the US, I would go to the appropriate forums.

I don't know what purpose these threads serve. If it is to notify people who may have known the deceased, then it should be in the appropriate regional forum.

I'm not vocal about this though. My involvement in this thread would have ended after my first post if someone had not asked why I read this in the first place. So to clarify for him/her: no there was no gun pointed at my head, but it is hard to not read thread titles when I am reading thread titles.

I hope this doesn't come off as being combative, because I'm not trying to sound that way. I've made my opinion clear, so I will refrain from posting further.

My sympathies to the families and friends of the victims, very sad indeed.

This is so tragic. Man, that woman looks like she has some serious issues going on -- you can see it in her face. Too bad she had to take them, a bottle and an SUV and unleash them on the road.

Now she's drawn more families into her tragic life ... forever.

I shouldn't be surprised by this, but in this clear cut case of cyclist doing everything right (cyclists on a wide shoulder, riding predictably, plenty of room, wide open visibility, not taking the lane, etc... basically doing everything as safe as possible, other than not riding at all) and driver misconduct (open container, swerved wide onto shoulder, leaving the scene, apparent drunkenness, previous DUI, it only took 8 comments ont he comment board for someone to start blaming the cyclists.

Thanks for posting this. I'm new to the forum, and didn't realize there was an issue about these threads, but I would have missed it otherwise. Anyway, there's been a rash of hit and runs here in OKC recently. Thank goodness no fatalities. . . yet.
