CAAD9 - Crank/cassette switch cost
My buddy just put a deposit down today on a CAAD 9 - 5. This one comes with a standard double and 12-25 cassette. What would be a typical charge for the shop to switch out the standard double and 12-25 for a compact and 12-27? Would they do it for free? For the cost of labor only? He definitely needs the compact and 12-27 setup and wasn't able to get in touch with the manager this evening, so I was just curious.

if he needs a compact and 12x27 he might do better to get a triple. He could probably find someone with a triple who would pay him to switch

if you have the tools, it's really easy to do it yourself.
the double FD will shift the triple decently when adjusted properly.

I should have originally added that 99% of his rides he could get away with the standard/12-25 combo (not a great deal of hills around the Quad Cities!), but just a couple rides a year he would need the compact/12-27 setup. I don't have the tools and he is even less of a wrench than I am. I was just curious what the going rate was for the switch at a bike shop. Thanks folks!

I doubt they will do it for free. If he would buy the components from the shop and have them installed, it will be about $200-250 for 105 range parts + installation. He probably hasn't found the right bike for him if it doesn't come with the components that he needs.

crankset they might give a direct swap.
it's a 10min job to replace the cassette, outboard BB cranks, reposition FD and adjust cable tension.
probably will cost the price of the tools to do it with, so my guess, $20~30 for labor.
lock ring wrench and chain whip for cassette
5mm allen key, spudger, pliers and external BB preload cap tool for crankset and FD.
can probably get away without having to redo the chain length.
