Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

a little more detail might be useful... such as... why are they better?

the fit, to begin with. they really hug your foot so every stroke seems extremely efficient. with my old shoes the upper was really flimsy and the straps were really weak so on the upstroke and the down it felt like i was losing a tremendous amount of power. with the sidi i feel like i'm not losing anything. the ratchet system ensures a really close/personal fit and the sole is much stiffer. i'm discounting how comfortable they are for now because any new shoe is comfortable the first few times you wear them but i have no doubt they'll stay that way over hundreds and thousands of miles. i cant believe i waited this long to upgrade

My Sidi shoes are the most comfortable best fitting shoes I own. Putting them on is like having my feet caressed, then lovingly held in place as I ride.

I could make graphic comparisons, but I think you get my drift.
For my feet, these shoes are simply amazing and actually worth their high sticker price.

I didn't go so far as Sidi but I went form a pair of Pearl Izumi cheapest-I-could-get shoes to a pair of Shimano SH-R131 (at an awesome price) a few weeks ago. Even with a relatively modest priced shoe the difference has been astounding. If I wear these out maybe I'll try Sidi.

Depends on your foot. One size/make doesn't fit all. I was happy with Sidis, until I tried Specialized and Voila! -- same kind of revelation.

OP's previous shoes did not fit. The SIDI effect may be inseparable from the FIT effect, but I'm pretty sure it's not a placebo.

My Sidi's are the most comfortable shoe I wear...period. That includes dress shoes, athletic shoes, hiking boots, everything.

Just to play devil's advocate (this really is true for me, though) my SIDI's are the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I own. Within minutes of biking my feet start to go to sleep. I finally fixed it (well, mostly) - I put Specialized insoles in my SIDI shoes. haha, go figure.

Although I'm a Sidi lover, It would be silly to think they fit everyone's foot. I know in the equipment area I have a lot of experience with (XC skiing), my own family has three brands that they need to use. Wife and kid won't get good fit in anything but Alpina. Other kid, only Rossy fits. Me? I've tried everything and unfortunately, Solomon is by far the best fit/most comfortable (unfortunate because they are so proud of their stuff they charge quite a bit more for comparable gear).

One Word - Italian.

Any shoe, regardless of what is is, is always better when Italian made, using the proprietary lasts they've used and refined for decades. Chinese made shoes, which probably use lasts purchased from lasts-r-us, never feel as good.

Next time your in the market for loafers or hiking boots, spend the extra $100 and get an Italian made pair. The difference is just as dramatic as going to Sidi.

My new Sidi Genius 5's feel much better than my older Genius shoes! Nothing beats Sidi (as long as the last fits your type of foot, etc).

I've had the Sidi 5.5 for three years. They have seen many miles; have survived two permanently- scarring road wrecks; and much verbal abuse from a Pearl Izumi-wearing brother-in-law. They have been abused and roughly used (it shows) and still are the most comfortable road shoes I have ever had. I will buy another pair as these are worn to the final thread. Just my .02.

Ciao!

Two Words - Skinny Feet.

Every Italian shoe I've ever tried or worn (soccer shoes, dress shoes, cycling shoes, etc) have fit on the narrow side. I'm not knocking the build quality as all are mostly built well, but they are too narrow, at least for my american feet. And I can wear a normal Nike/Asics/NB running shoe without having to jump to a wide.

They are THE r&d team, IMO.
