Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some people are running away from something, while others are running toward something.

For me, if I was going somewhere, I was running!

I don't even run for the bus, much less for recreation.

It must suck not being able to coast...

One of my favorite quotes is from Gabe Mirkin, in his book, years ago. He explains the difference between joggers and runners.

Joggers jog because they think it is good for them, runners run even if they know it will kill them.

For pure efficiency and convenience, its going to be tough to beat running as an exercise. My point however is that the thought you need to ride for 2 hours to get a workout of value is wrong.
I don't know about you, but I don't go blasting through my neighborhood at 25mph+ (which is what you'd need to do to get a workout in 30 minutes or less on a bike). The speed limit is only 20 anyways. I need to hit the open road, and even then some folks don't exactly have a decent place to ride beside their house/apartment and they need to take their bike somewhere.

You can pretty much run anywhere and anytime; the same can't be said for bicycling due to traffic, roads, stoplights, weather, etc.

Honestly, after 20 minutes on a bike, even pushing it hard, I don't feel as gassed as I do running windsprints, a hard 5K, etc.

If you don't live near huge hills, please tell how you get a great 20 minute workout on a bike (other than trying to hit and maintain max speed in the top gear).

But again, the only reason I run is due to time constraints and certain sprint workouts to keep my speed/endurance up. I'd much rather be on a bike.

running is a much more effective form of exercise. I run for a Division one school and cycle as a form of cross training. Since your body is used to cycling and not running, running will be very difficult. Do not believe that you are in good running shape because you cycle.

The funny thing is as a budding triathlete I often ask myself, why the hell do people swim?

Cycling I love, Running is ok, swimming sucks, at least for me it does.

It varies. I can ride 15 miles in my neighborhood without rpeating anything. But depending on the evening's drill, I might just do multiple repeats of a one mile loop I can do without stopping.

The particular workout will vary, but an example of a fairly intense workout would be 5 sets of Speed intervals. 30 seconds at full bore, 120rpm cadence, 30 seconds off, repeat 6 times = 1 set. With warm up, cool down, and recovery betweeen sets that's about an hour. I bet that typically that would be around 15 miles. Done correctly, I think you'll feel like you've had a workout.

It is not about the mileage, It's not even about time. Its about time and intensity.

Speed limit in my development is 30mph. Cars routinely roll down the "main" arteries in the low to mid 30's.

I did get yelled out one day doing sprint workouts (I was only doing 35mph) I kinda took some pride in it actually.

A good set of intervals can get you up there and higher pretty easily.

Does there really need to be so many pages on this topic?

People run because they enjoy running.

I bet there is a thread on runforums.net called "Why do people bike?"

I tried running for my high school's track team years ago and quickly hated it. However, I was overweight and lazy at the time, and I had the wrong shoes for my flat feet. (Note: Don't ever try running in Nike Air Force Ones; it sucks!)

Cycling was definitely easier to get into, but was in no ways easy to get faster. Getting faster involves a LOT of pain and suffering, and staying fast in a long ride is a continuous stream of hurt.

With that said, I'm thinking about getting into running. It's just a matter of when I go out there and do it.

My worst failure in athletics has been in running since I could never break the 3 hour barrier for the marathon. I could only muster up a 3:01. Aside from that, running has been awesome for me.

Of course since my left knee quit on me 3 years ago at 57, I have joined the ranks of thousands of former runners as a cyclist.

Y'all think running sucks - try swimming. For real.

There is NO correlation between your athletic ability on run/bike and swim. Like absolutely zero. I'm usually top 5% on marathons-5k runs, and top 5% in tribike races, but I'm bottom 5% on the swim. And I try and take my swim fairly seriously. Freaking grandmothers are passing me in the pool - it's really ridiculous. They say it's "all technique", but dang, it really is ALL TECHNIQUE on the swim, and it's not at all easy to master.

Learning to swim well as an adult is akin to learning a second language imo. I swam as a kid for a couple of years, then didn't do jack for 15 years. I get in the pool and although not fast by any stretch, can hold my own against 80% of all triathletes i know.....which is kinda sad because i know how slow i really am compared to real swimmers.

The worst part of triathlon is the run. At least it should be.....because if you didn't empty the tank enough to make the last few miles a living hell, then you need to HTFU.

I swam competitively for 8 years and was a nationally ranked junior. I quit when I was 17, but my technique and ease in the water make me really fast even now. That was true even when I was out of shape, but now that I'm fitter it's pretty fun.

Starting tomorrow, I'm adding a few miles to my morning commute to stop at a pool near downtown for a morning swim workout. I can probably only manage it two times a week, but it'll make a big difference in my cardio, body fat and metabolism. Swimming makes my body burn fuel much better, which is good because it also makes me ravenously hungry.

This new routine also means I get to ride much harder on the way to work. We don't have showers at my office, but I can take one after my swim. Only two miles (uphill) from there to work.

Aren't there team triathlons? Maybe I can find somebody to do the running for me...
