Replace Helmet?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replace Helmet?

I read in a book that you should replace your helmet every few years whether you've damaged it or not. Is that true or just a marketing ploy? My wife and I have had our helmets for probably 6 years and I, of course, don't want to ask any of the stores since their job is to sell things. I did a search on this and didn't find anything.

check the manufacturing date on the inside of your helmet, it may be older than 6 years. The materials break down over time and as new helmets are developed so are new ways of testing them. I think the rule of thumb is 5 years from the date of manufacture....?

Read the following:

I agree with the rationale that if it's damaged, replace it. Otherwise, a well cared for helmet can last for years.

fixed.

It seems that the biggest concern is the breakdown of foam from sun exposure, pollutant exposure, etc. It's very hard to tell exactly how much it will withstand so the manufacturers just say 3-5 years to cover their butts. Since I have had a good reason to replace my helmet more than once every 5 years, it hasn't been a concern of mine yet.

NFW.

Unless "a few" means "10 or more".
