American Classic 420 with CX-ray spokes?
Can the AC420 wheelset be re-laced with CX-ray spokes? AC dun have such an upgrade and i asked them why. Their response was that cx-ray spokes will not be stiff enough for the low spoke count wheel build. Is that true? Anyone with experience with the AC bladed spokes and cx-ray on the AC420 wheelset with AC hubs? Is there alot of difference in stiffness?
What issues might i face with this particular build? im 70-75kg and im planning to use it as an everyday training/race wheelset. Use for sprints, TT, all round.

It's fine with a powertap.
Not necessarily the cheapest way about things. I like the AC rim but it's pretty flexible; the rear hubs are the same. The Niobium 30's are way easier to build, fyi, but are obviously slightly heavier and are missing 4 mm of depth.

yup i know about the Niobium rims but i prefer the slightly deeper depth, lighter rim and nicer look on the ac420s.
Will the cxray build only with with powertap? Can they work with the standard AC hubs?

the sapim cx-rays and dt aerolites are designed to fit through standard spoke holes. as long as the hub has 2.4mm diameter spoke holes, it will work.

sry what im meaning to say is will the build be stiff enough to work? Cause im worried about wat AC has said tt cx-ray spokes wont create a stiff enough build, however i hear many who use AC420 rims with cx-ray spokes

at 18f and 24 rear, it would really be limited to light riders. but I don't have first hand experience with the wheels or rims so I can't say conclusively. I'm quite sure that a 60kg rider should have no problem with it. 70~75kg is probably okay too, but someone else will have the answer to that.

I've ridden 350's and 420's for about 3 years now. 420's are good wheels, but aren't the stiffest to begin with when built with standard spokes. If Bill or one of his guys told you not to do it, I'd follow their advice. I know for a fact they'll build 350's up with the x-ray's, but the rear is a 32 hole.

I was thinking about getting some ZIPP Team Wheels which use the CX-rays with 28f/32r and I weigh 195 pounds. Talking to one of their guys, he didn't reccommend it for an everyday use type wheel based on my weight. With your lighter weight but fewer spokes on the AC420, you might have the same problem.

I have a set of standard non aero spoke AC 420 wheels and recently replaced the spokes myself with DT SWISS COMPETITION SPOKES 2.0/1.8/2.0 so far they are very good. To me they actually fill a little stiffer than the original spokes and ride better as well I'm 163 lbs. and use them for flats and climbing.

Hey, good post. Did you use 272mm with the DT nipples?

If you use the original AC nipples you want 273 mm spokes to use with the original nipples
If you are going to use some other nipples you need 271 mm spokes and use replacement (non-AC) nipples
Cost that I paid for DT Swiss Double Butted 2.0/1.8/2.0 (14/15/14) $19.99 for 18 w/nipples you need 2 packs.
