Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's how it should be.

It's quite nice... although for aesthetics I'd change the red tape out to fizik dual tape (black/grey)... and the amount of spacers does seem a bit dangerous for a carbon steerer, but I don't know what 3T's limits are so hopefully your LBS took that into consideration. (I still would have gone with Reynolds clinchers over the 404 clinchers though )

So which is it? Are you borrowing a wad from Uncle Sam every semester or are your parents floating you $20K checks every month?

There is no way you can be in such a demanding program at a young age and hold down any kind of job that will allow you to drop cash on that bike.

Fess up dude.
Does he ask you how you pay your mortgage or rent? You want to know how much I spent on my education? A grand total of $1500 and I've got a Bachellors and a Masters and working on a second Masters and post Masters degrees simultaneously right now. Education is out there for cheap or free and I didnt have loans or parents help me get my degrees, so why should he?

Bottom line is he saved his money and bought stuff he wants. Anybody can do it. Live frugally by not wasting money on items you dont need, invest, and then you can drop $10k like its nothing on stuff you want too. The OP does it, I do it, lots of people do it, it's called financial responsibility. There's an amazing thing called saving instead of credit cards, give it a shot sometime.

Good call. I'm happy to hear he can buy anything he wants... more power to him. Shoot, i'm happy because he's supporting business and contributing to the economy. There's just way too many trolls in this thread right now.

If it was his first ride in 4 years and he averaged 20 mph, 95 cadence, and 140 heart rate, then i'd be a bit jealous But a 180 average HR going 16 mph and a cadence of 70

Keep on trucking though

Congrats on the ride! It's totally sweet!

Having an expensive car doesnt mean you're wealthy. Any idiot can get a loan or lease so they can have a nice car to park in front of their foreclosure sign.

Did you completely gloss over the fact that he is a 20 year-old graduate student (from what he says)? Also, you must have missed the Porsche, expensive camera, $1300 printer, etc...and that's just what we know about.

I'm sorry, but it would be nearly impossible to grad. high school at 15, college at 19 then a year later "work hard" and save enough cash for all of the toys he owns.

Personally, I don't care. My advice was that at such a young age you should be thinking about your future rather than dropping 10 large on a bike that'll get ridden around campus. Also, I don't care if mommy and daddy paid for it (even indirectly)--but to come on here and say that he "skipped starbucks" to save for it is just insulting.

But hey, more power to the OP. I've seen my fair share of the rich piss away money like there is no tomorrow. $10K is a small amount to some--much like $50 would be to the average guy.

Must be nice to have rich parents:

"Today was my first time behind the wheel of a Porsche, and I have to say, I am absolutely in love. It's the first time in a very long time that any car has put a smile on my face. I spent a lot of time going over the various models and options, and decided on a Carrera 4S. I live in New England, and while I have a winter car (Audi A4), I wanted a true sports car with AWD incase of the random rain or snow."

I find it difficult to believe you can be in grad school, buy a $10,000 bike, have $10,000 in camera equipment, drive an Audi, and be looking to add a Porsche for your second car, by skipping Latte's

Nothing wrong with having rich parents, but I'm not quite buying the self made boy wonderkind bit.

And, if you're going to throw down for a bike like that, you should at least know how to level your seat, and buy decent bibs, and skip the underwer under the bibs.

Either the OP isn't really 20 years old or he has been so spoiled his entire (short) life whereas only a Carrera 4S brings a smile to his face.

When I was 20 years old in college I drove a 91 Honda Civic Si that I got brand new back in 91 when I graduated high school at 18. I remember putting $150 lowering springs on it one summer and having it blow my mind with how much better it handled and how much more fun it was to drive. The 20 year old OP is only amused by a $110K Porsche.

It's funny how money changes your perspective.

I love seeing beautiful bikes and equipment, but I don't want to be fed a line of bull with that.

Please believe me when I say I have skipped the vast majority of this thread, but I have to say that this thought was the first thing that crossed my mind when I read the OP's first post:

"Dude seems to know enough to buy what many here consider the perfect bike, yet he was dumb enough to wear his effin' UNDERWEAR UNDER HIS BIBS on the christening ride?"

That's messed up right there. All this other financial stuff is quite secondary.

OP, sweet bike, nice pics. Don't worry about people dumping on you. They flamed me awhile back because I posted pictures of my RS with a short stem. There are a lot of negative, jealous people out there. No wonder you hardly see bike porn on this forum anymore. Too bad.

Have a great time with it and ride hard! That bike requires it.

I dont see how you can be insulted when someone says that they "skipped starbucks" to save enough money for a bike. Assuming he spent 10k on his bike "that'll get ridden around campus" is probably the most ridiculous thing I think you've said so far in your series of responses to the OP. Just because he's a student doesnt mean that's all he does with his life. Right now I'm a student. This past year I've spent about 10k on bikes and related gear. Does that mean I'm just doing laps around campus too?

It's not impossible to do what he's done. I went to school with some folks who graduated from HS early. It's not hard to do at all. You can go to college and/or grad school for free if you've got grants and scholarships, also not hard to do. Working while you're in school brings in income, and if he's got no expenses, it's very feasible that he has enough money for all that. When I was 25, I owned a house and a new Corvette Z06, had my Masters degree, and had plenty left over for fun toys and retirement plan that was on track for future success. So tell me Suze Orman, how is his financial situation impossible?

Just admit you're jealous and that's the only reason you're criticizing the OP. You say you dont care, but you obviously do. If he said he was 40 years old, you wouldn't have given two turds about where his finances are coming from.

The Porsche changed the whole situation. UMD, when you were in college as a regular guy, we did not have a big national debt and things were cheaper and young people could save.

Nowadays you have to have help or moolah or have an incredible side business to do this. If 20 years old the only way this could even be possible with the bike purchase as a regular guy is to work at an LBS/ski shop.

Trust fund nothing wrong with that either. I know someone who routinely says in a drum forum, my grandpa worked hard so I don't have to when asked how he get's expensive drumsets regularly. OP is definitely in the internet. No he is not pretending to be thin and he does know how to take ski pictures.
