Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

AC 420 braking insecurity. Is this an issue?

I took my new AC420 wheels out for a spin today with new kool stop salmon pads.
When i first braked on it, i noticed a swish sound when the pads touched the braking surface. sounds like the pads arent gripping well on the braking surface enough. And felt insecure when braking. Only when i applied much streg was it able to stop the wheel with considerable power. It had a noticeably different feel as compared to my previous wheelset with shimano brake pads.
I noticed the pads had some black stuff located in the gaps. Is there something im supposed to do with the new pads and braking surface before using them? The braking power seemed greatly less compared to my previous setup.

Advice much appreciated. Had high hopes for the Ac420.
Thanks!

I have a set of AC420 wheels and am using salmon kool stop pads and braking seems good to me.
Do make sure they are adjusted as best you can, and I take the pads and clean them once in a while, I have had grinding noises from the pads in wet conditions that required me cleaning pads and wheel brake surface but was good after that.

What do you clean the surfaces with? Just a cloth to wipe off the grime right?
