Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Buying my first road bike...

Im buying my first road bike fairly soon and was curious to what some thoughts were on the few bikes Im looking at.

Specialized Allez
Giant Defy
Schwinn Fastback

All are around the $800 price point I wanted to stay at.

Also, found a Lemond Alpe D'Huez (brand new) for $1000 (usually sells for $1500 I guess) and wondering if it might be worth the extra $200.

Been mtn biking for years and haven't been on a road bike so I wanted a fairly cost efficient bike to start.

Any thoughts, comments, advice is welcome.

Thanks.

That Lemond looks good. Mostly 105 with a carbon/al frame, and for that price. Ride all of them and buy the one you like the best. That's really the only way to pick a bike.

I rode a specialized allez as my first road bike. It is a nice bike for the price. Learned how to ride on it, and a few years later I moved onto something better. No real complaints, but a few too many flats.

Oh yeah, remember to budget some extra dollars for kit, pedals, shoes, bag, pump, etc. That price on the bike is just a starting point.

I think I've decided to go with the Defy for my first. My budget is $800 and just looking around, I can upgrade components later on for not so much (slightly used). I know color isn't the most important thing, but the blue/black/aluminum combo is much sharper than the Allez the shop has and I'm just not a Schwinn fan. Plus, it matches my Jetta.....
