Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

completely different rides. the alpe is a ton shorter. they say it's steeper in the first few kilometers, but i didn't really notice much change in the gradient on the way up; if it shallows out a bit, it wasn't enough for me to change gears.

everything they say about ventoux is true. it's a brute. well over 20 kilometers. the pitch through the forest is a relentless 8-9%. you know what they call the short 6.5% gradient in the forest? - your chance to recover. but as bad as this is, it's worse on top. you reach the chalet and still have 6K to go. and the trees go away and it really does look like the moon up there. and if you watched the tour the day it climbed ventoux, phil and paul were right; the wind was absolutely howling up there, just a screaming wind. those last 6K on that steep pitch above the tree line in that wind was really damn hard work.

i didn't know that. i would have liked to have seen him. i have a lot of respect for what he did on the bike. i wish he'd shut up, though. all his talking in the last few years makes him look bad, IMO

My brother and I are gong the last few days of September. Our outfitter told me that we will have the Alpes to ourselves and spectacular weather. we are staying in Besse a little hamlet in the middle of the Marmott loop. Galibier, Huez, Les Deux Alpes, telegraphe and the backside. It is going to be awesome. Best part is after riding in the alpes we are flying to Munich for Octoberfest! YAY!
