Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What if...

I pumped my 853 steel frame full of hydrogen, and I mean a crap load of hydrogen. I mean enough to put the Hindenburg to shame. Then I managed to seal it all in there. Then mayhap the tubes as well. What kind of weight savings are we looking at here?

Do you mean Helium? I don't think bike frames are air (Helium/Hydrogen) tight and the cost would be prohibitive I would think if somehow you did manage to make it air tight. Buy a lighter bike or train harder/more would be a more practical solution.

Well I sort of figure that at a certain point compressing the hydrogen would only add weight? After all the oxygen is pushed out?

More gass compressed into the same space will make it weigh more [compared to less hydrogen], not less. Fail.

given the volume in all the pipings is much less than what 1 mol of gas would take up at atmospheric pressure, the amount of weight savings you'd realistically be looking at is fractions of grams.

even if you assume there to be 22.4 liters of volume, then you would be saving maybe something close to 27 grams... think about this now, how thin is your frame, now think about 22 liters of milk. this is assuming that both gases are entirely ideal, and that you're replacing equimolar quantities.

just figured i'd give you an actual response instead of denouncing this idea as stupid (which it really is)

Literary dramatics aside, to the point where the oxygen has been completely replaced with hydrogen, would there be a noticeable difference in weight? Personally I think it is an interesting question.

Or if you took a CF or Aluminum frame with more surface area, could there be a difference, albeit slight? Or just took all the air out of it altogether?

If you really want to save weight, make it a vacuum inside the tubes. Nothing weighs less than nothing.

What you ate for breakfast would have a larger effect on weight than what (if any) gas is in your frame tubes.

haha winnar

in all seriousness (man that's hard to type), i'd have to wonder if a carbon fiber frame with weaving running parallel to the frame could sustain that type of pressure difference.

Eh, you were right the first time. It's just fun when the English language fails to be specific by its own nature.
