Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Since when is Fuji the store brand for PB? I bought my Fuji at a LBS, Austin Tricyclist, which also sells Cervelo and Cannondale.

I wish my PB shop was closer. Hell, I wish WalMart sold quality bike parts. Besides the colorful people that shop at WalMart, I don't care, I buy my tubes at wally word just so I don't have to go to my LBS. I'd love to be able to shop for bike parts and not always get some BS story to squeeze a few bucks out of me.

They are ok. Their mail order service can be pretty screwed up.. Generally I don't like chains and hate the way they destroy locally owned small business'. I do get better personal service at the mom and pop bike shops. For sure. Example. One Performance. they have a glass wall between the service Dept and the customer. They have a write up person between the two.. That's service. Luckily not all Performance stores are like that. I hate that.. My life depends upon how the Front Tube's Headset is re-assembled . And I can't even talk to the mechanic. I certainly do not use that particular Performance store.

They sell things by their price. Not their knowledge or love for cycling.

Some of us appreciate real service. It doesn't cost all that much more.

Now I feel bad. But I did get red cranks with BB ceramic for 315.00

The Albuquerque shop, you need to talk to the manager when she's not busy and she'll get you good deals. The head service machanic knows what he is talking about and is a nice guy but I see him trapped by PB corporate policies sometimes.

PB is far from me so I usually go to my LBS which is nearby and they are nice and give good deals. I wish I had enough dough to buy bikes from them. I never bought any new car or bike ever in my life. And I am not starting anytime soon.

The PB bikes are kind of cheapo looking. Just not the right kind of components. They usually are not the cheapest except for some of their clothes.

I went to another LBS -- the oldest one in Albuquerque and I got a Fizik Arione Ti saddle for 109. I haven't found anything that cheap online. Their Ksyrium Elites were 50 cheaper than anyone online and at least 125 than most LBS'es in the city. Mom and Pop shop with a lock business on the side. They use to sell Colnagos and now Scotts

I just got a new pair of Adidas adiStar XC Ultra shoes from Performance mailorder and they were 77% off from $220 to $50. I later found out that I bought the last pair..

I now use them when I'm on either my road or mountain bikes to ride through town and socialize because i don't need cleat covers for my road shoes.. Infact, i just might replace them as my training shoes...

Between the Team Performance cash back and waiting for sales and coupons, I can often find what I'm looking for at prices better than online after shipping and handling charges. The head wrench here at the Plano store is excellent and I've never had bad service there. Several times I've had a salesperson advise me to wait on a purchase for a few days because a sale is coming up.

Go on, call me a shill and get it over with.

Oh and I often shop and Walmart too. I'm just trying to get by on what I have.
I suspect the Plano store is not really like a lot of PB shops. We are lucky that real cyclists tend to work there and the wrench knows what he is talking about.

I don't buy a lot of "parts" there but I do buy consumeables like tubes, some tires, gels, gloves, etc. It's nice option for rain gear, chains (if they have them), and pumps too.

I've found the performance bike shop to have more competent mechanics and service people then the local LBSs' around here. I guess maybe because performance just has more resources than a local LBS. Sad but true. Would I buy a bike from performance? I usually just by parts, but would definitely buy from performance if they have a good deal on a bike.

For educated consumers who know to shop the sales and know exactly what they want, PB is generally a good deal. For folks who need a little extra TLC stick to the LBS.

I am lucky in that PB's Paoli (Pa) store is only a few miles from my house. They virtually know me by name there.

The local PB shop here near Cleveland seems to have a revolving door policy for managers. The staff here generally would not know the difference between a 23c or a 25c for instance. Our PB store is the Walmart of bikestores. If you know what you need and they have it fine.....but don't expect any knowledgeable assistance.
As txvintage said above. Maybe the problem is not company wide but more a store by store issue.
